Prince.... WHAT? AWESOME.

Post by snatchel »

Where the heck have I been? Sure, i've heard of Prince but I have never really listened to his music until I went on a day trip with my mother today and she was playing a bunch of his music on her ipod. Yall... Prince is the bees-knees. Purple Rain is probably one of the prettiest songs I have ever heard. I should have been born in the 70's instead of the 80's. Please tell me I'm not the only person on this forum who likes the guy who knows what doves sound like when they cry, and loves purple.

Prince happens to be a pretty darn good guitarist too. I'm not a huge fan of his partly because I find his whole schtick a little too self-involved and partly because I'm just not into that kind of music. But I'll give him this.... the other day he was on a talk show, I forget which one, and the host was trying to cajole him into cussing. He wouldn't do it, and he chastised the host for cussing, saying he shouldn't do it.

I watched him on a youtube video of an interview with Oprah. He is... different I guess is the word. Strange. But he can definately jam on a guitar and piano.

I like Prince, but like TAM said, his schtick is over the top. His guitar skills are incredible and his music, for the most part, is pretty good. I probably listen to him once every month or when the mood strikes.

Albeit he was a little weird in his early days (many musicians are a little different), he is supposedly a pretty straight shooter and apparently an all around good person. His genre of music is not my personal choice, but being a musician myself, I appreciate all types of music and like what I like and don't like what I don't like. The thing you have to remember is his music was popular back in the 80's when you had the likes of Cindy Lauper, Devo, Duran Duran, etc, so it was pretty cool stuff then. Overall, he made it in the business and still lives off of his royalties from the music and his writing. Also, even though it is a little off-beat, the movie Purple Rain is not too bad if you are into 80's music and a kinda autobiographical movie about him.

Didn't he have another name for awhile?
Seems like I remember he had some name followed by "formerly known as Prince" or do I have it backwards?

He, for a while, officially changed his name to a symbol.

Effectively having no name you could pronounce, hence the term "The artist formally known as..."

From Wikipedia
Prince Rogers Nelson (born June 7, 1958), better known as Prince, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. He has also been known under the unpronounceable symbol, which he used between 1993 and 2000. During that period he was frequently referred to in the media as "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince", often abbreviated to "TAFKAP", "AFKAP" or simply "The Artist".[1]

The only thing keeping me from changing my name to a symbol is I'm not sure that the DPS would print a symbol on my CHL. I had no idea he actually changed his name so that he was referred to "Formerly known as Prince." Something about that is just cool.

He definately isn't in my genre either, i'm more of a country music kinda guy.....but something about it struck me. Honestly, the song Purple Rain doesn't do much for me, but if you youtube "purple rain Baz Mantis'" it is just the instrumental featuring the guitaar--and it is absolutely awesome. I wish I played a musical instrument....

You could change your name to a symbol and then be known as "Formally known as No More Signature". :smilelol5: :smilelol5:

He is an awesome musician and song writer, but he's also one strange banana. I also like a few of his songs.

He didn't change his name so he would be called "The artist formerly known as Prince." He changed it because of a dispute with a record label at the time. Once the contract ran out he changed it back.

Strange Banana indeed. AEA, My wife gave me the name "Snatchel" a few years ago and has joked that I should change my legal name from Caleb to Snatchel. I'm sure that would look professional though...

He is generally not my cup of tea, altho I do find some of his songs catchy. He is definitely a showman and knows how to attract attention, but since AFAIK he has managed to do this without flaunting massive drug or alcohol abuse, felonies, or messing with little kids, he's OK by me.
