A musical genius and crazy like a fox. Like Madonna, he was very crafty in the business side of controlling his music. He also managed several other musicians such as the ones featured in his Purple Rain movie. Vocally very gifted. His album "Purple Rain" thrice bested Michael Jackson's "Thriller" at the Grammy Awards.

If his pure musical talent cannot overcome the "strange" factor, perhaps everyone would be more comfortable with other world class vocalists such as Sarah Brightman or perhap Andrea Bocelli.

I had 1999 and Purple Rain on vinyl but I may like this cover even more than the original.

His music style is not for me. Talented but just not to my liking. He made a movie, back in the 80's I think it was, called Purple Rain.

I was in high school when Purple Rain came out. I was too cool to admit liking it at the time. However after seeing some of his performances on TV, I will say he put's his all into it and regret not ever seeing him live.

Prince was and is eclectic and enigmatic. His music is gold but many still prefer dross. Does anyone besides me read all of the posts in a thread? You miss so much if you do not.

Not me! I just like to skip to the end and post the same thing that 5 other people have to see if I get a response from someone.

Effectively having no name you could pronounce, hence the term "The artist formally known as..."
If my memory is correct, the artist formerly known as Prince was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson one evening. Johnny held up the above symbol made of styrofoam and said this is his name now. Johnny then broke off a piece of the symbol and said "I wonder what they will call him now!" I about fell on the floor laughing.

I enjoy Prince's music, just hadn't thought about it for a long time. I guess I'll have to get into iTunes soon, also!

I partied like it was 1999 but I never liked his style, never thought he was a musician until I saw this:

His part starts about 3:30. I guess he didn't get the memo that celeb tributes were about taking turns hitting a lick or two. He rocked down the house.
