Wayne Sabaj, an unemployed carpenter who lives in unincorporated McHenry County, went out to his garden to find some broccoli to go with his grilled beef for dinner.
There he found greens of a different sort Monday. Lying in the garden among the peppers was a duffel bag filled with $20 bills—lots of them.
...unless it's like the old couple who found a bag of money on the street in Dallas a few years back...they did the right thing...turned it over to the police...turns out it wasn't the smart thing...it was shrinking steadily from the police lockup...and when they went to claim it, it had shrunk so much the media was asking questions...so they called a federal agency in, who promptly declared it drug money and took charge over what was left...ending the investigation...the old couple got nothing, last update I read...
...on my property, I'd turn it in, too...prolly a drug situation and wouldn't want them to come asking my wife where it went when they felt it safe to reclaim it...or if it were a kidnapping ransom dropped in the wrong place, I wouldn't want a life on my conscience...but found on the street...with no identifying info in it...what bag??????????????
IIRC, the incident that you just recounted went like this:
The Christian couple were driving somewhere in North Dallas in the vicinity of Preston Road (Texas SH 289) and Arapaho Road.
They saw a large green duffle bag in the road, picked it up, and found that it contained $300,000 in cash.
They turned it in to Dallas PD.
When the waiting period was over (for someone to claim it), the couple tried to get the money back.
Dallas PD said they wouldn't give it to them since it was obviously drug money.
The couple filed suit to get the money back, and one of their arguments was that God intended that money to be theirs
since he put it in their path. I don't know how much legal water that would hold. I'm not aware of any further developments
in this story.

...what I read in the paper...(late 90s, I think, was that when they went back to claim it, the amount had dwindled by almost 80K, they called for an investigation and then the DEA stepped in and siezed it...saving the PD the investigation...no matter what the details...it sucked!!! they were cheated out of what was rightfully theirs...it's happened since to a little girl...media turned the fire up so high they re-considered and she'll get it after about 180 days...this was last year...and around 8K, if I remember rightly...
