Concerned about fellow chler at work

Post by CrimsonSoul »

So sitting at work we got a new guy that's training on my crew and the topiccame up and he has his CHL nothing wrong with that. Then he starts telling stories of how a month or two ago he got into a huge fight between cities one city of people were fighting people from another city because someone was talking crap. Then he talks about how he wasn't sure if he would get his CHL because he had two felony charges one was no billed and the other dismissed THEN he was talking about how he wasn't sure if he would get this job because before they called him he was smoking fake marijuana and thought he might fail the drug test. They let anyone get a CHL these days...

Sorry for bad punctuation I'm on my phone.

Freedom is messy. Although we like to talk about how law-abiding CHL's are, and that we are great citizens, I am sure there is a fair percentage of jerks out there as well.

Every criminal had a clean record at one stage of their life.

I'd still rather have an impartial "shall issue" system where someone can get licensed as long as they meet objective criteria, regardless of what I personally think of the person. The alternative is a "may issue" system like Maryland, New York, or California where the politically connected get the permit and the average Joe gets the shaft.

Did you actually see his CHL?

The screening process might well have worked considerably better than your coworker would have you think.

The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and Texas has provisions for dealing with folks who demonstrate they aren't responsible enough to be trusted with a CHL even if they manage to get one.

With as many brushes with disqualifying situations as your coworker has self reportedly had, he may find that getting it was easy compared to keeping it.

The other even more likely read on this is that your new coworker is an attention seeker who leads a really active fantasy life and enjoys regaling people around him with his imaginary exploits. In that case, he'll keep telling as long as the folks around him keep listening.

While I agree with Jumping Frog it does bother me that someone like this has a CHL.

I understand that some people messed up before and have changed their lives. That is great and I believe that if they have changed they should be able to carry a firearm.

However, from what Crimson Soul said about this guy tells me that he hasn't changed. I get the feeling that he is very immature and constantly makes bad decisions. I also get the feeling that he only wants his CHL so when he carries he doesn't get into trouble (pure assumption that he carried prior to CHL). Lastly I do not think he carries for self-defense but more for the bad boy persona and to use it as a threat.

This is all assumptions made on my part and yes I am aware of what that does. But a man that is looking for a job and willingly goes out and smokes K2/Spice (synthetic marijuana) is not mature in his decisions. A man that willingly joins a fight on the basis that one townspeople were talking crap on/to another townspeople is not mature in his decision making.

I feel that it is people like this that pose the biggest threat to us CHLers. As they are more than likely to use their gun to scare people because they think it's "cool" or makes them look like Billy bad boy or shoot people in an incident like the fight described above and claim self-defense.

A very good point. Someone that is willing to openly admit/brag about these things to new people and proudly show off a CHL is very likely to be just as Excaliber described.

Well since he already has a CHL, I guess the best thing to do at this point is set a good example. Maybe if you steer him in the right direction he'll see the light.

Very doubtful. Add one more to the Darwin Awards. Some behaviors & personalities will never change until they meet their maker...psychos, pedofiles, hoarders, alcoholics, the list goes on and on.

I'm gonna go with this. Sounds very Gecko45. I had a friend who would always live vicariously and co-opt his friends stories. He always knew "some guy" or would talk about guns like he was an expert but didn't own any and couldn't even keep enough track of things to realize he kept quoting me back to me.

Some of these behaviors and personalities that you list are diseases that can be overcome. I know for a fact that alcoholics can change. My grandfather is one and has completely changed from when I knew him as a young child. It takes a strong will and desire to accept that there is something wrong and then to act accordingly to change it.

For those that have not changed they either have not reached their "breaking point", lack the desire/will to change, do not have the support needed, do not see a problem, or it is a matter of will not change as opposed to cannot change.

To say that all those with a problem cannot change is completely wrong.

Of course, you've been doing mostly important stuff for your whole life so there's still a fair amount of that related material around...... "rlol"

I see one of two things happening. Either he will or won't do something stupid in the future.

If he doesn't, then all is well and your concern will proven to be unjustified. Lots of people are all talk and lots of people are morons. They can vote, have kids, and all the other things we can do in a free country. While his past choices may have been bad, they weren't bad enough for a prosecutor or grand jury to do something about it.

The other outcome is that he does indeed do something stupid. In that case, he'll likely come to a bad end, either going out darwin style or the law will deal with him (and much more harshly if a gun is involved).

There are lots of people whose driving, child rearing, and life choices scare the crap out of me. Usually, they wmeither get their just deserts, or they see the error of their ways.
