1911 Barrel nicks

Post by 68Charger »

I took my baby down to the range this Labor Day weekend, and when I got home I got to cleaning her and found some nicks on the barrel. It's outside the barrel and they're not deep or anything at all, but should I be concerned?

It's a S&W1911. I'll add some pictures here soon.

Thanks in advance

Edit: Nevermind on the pictures part. I'm trying to use my SLR, and can't for the life of me get the pictures right. I don't have a macro lens either. :/

They're VERY small nicks, like as if you would use the tip of your finger nail into clay. VERY small though.

It's in .45 flavor, and now that I think about it, I'm concerned what are causing those nicks as well? It's all internal, so the brass wouldn't nick it..

Now I'm curious. :grumble

Here's a pic of a random 1911 barrel. Not of mine, but just giving you an idea where they're located.

Click the picture to show where it's located. I'm a master of MS Paint and got a degree in it, too.

You might have better luck getting a macro shot with a point and shoot or your camera phone, due to the small sensors they can take macro shots a lot easier than a SLR, well at least cheaper.

Good luck finding out whats scratching your barrel.

Nah, not scratches at all. It's as if you would your fingernail and barely touch like a piece of clay with it. You know how it would leave that indention? That's what it looks like. They're no types of pattern to it, it's just random nicks here and there. I'll try to get some pics..

Here's a pic of one. It's kind of still hard to see, but I guarantee you would see them in person.

Sounds like your barrel may be 'pining' on the slide. It may mean the bushing is worn and allowing the barrel to 'slap' against the slide near the front bottom of the ejection port or possibly the bushing is loose.

My suggestion is to slowly operate your slide by hand and see if there is a point where the barrel would possibly make contact with the slide or bushing as it works back and forth. If so, then you need to figure out what part (bushing, slide stop, linkage, etc. ) is allowing enough play or slop for that to happen.

I have a Springfield 1911A1 Loaded that was doing the same thing, brand new. I read about lightly polishing both the inner slide, not all just the area at the end around the barrel and slide locking surfaces. I also polished the barrel and now I don't have that problem anymore. I believe that it was caused by those locking surfaces having sharp edges/burrs that were not properly removed at the factory. I also lightly lubricate the barrel with a gun grease, very lightly, then wipe with a rag, during my cleaning sessions.
Unless we keep the barbarian virtues, gaining the civilized ones will be of little avail. Oversentimentality, oversoftness, washiness, and mushiness are the great dangers of this age and of this people." Teddy Roosevelt"

If it is a burr problem take it to a smith and have him deburr the entire pistol. Well worth it :thumbs2:

I'll look a bit further into this. Thanks. :tiphat:

Thanks mate! I appreciate it all. I checked the following above, and everything seems to turn out fine? I'll keep an eye out for it though.
