stupid questions repeatedly.

That's cool. I just won't answer them then. If you're just using the members that way, then I won't waste my time taking the trouble to give you an honest answer, and then you can do your own thinking for yourself.

Have a nice day. :tiphat:

Plus: Agg assault, intentional failure to conceal, criminal mischief (depending on where round lands), and probably some municipal violations.

Any or all of these could be applied depending on the situation. Also, in public, what exactly is a harmless direction?

So this is a test?

Are you trolling?

Do you continue to ask a question until you get the answer you want?

That's cool.

Glad I didn't waste your time earlier in the post.

I once fired what could be called a warning shot. This was in pre-CHL Texas.

A dog commotion started up in my fenced rural front yard. I grabbed a short-barrelled .38 kept for just such situations and looked out.
Two stray mutts that I had seen around the area had jumped the fence and were taking on my Corgie. No people were around that I could tell.
I stepped out, checked for people again, and used my loudest command voice to order a stop, three times. No effect.
The dogs were now in more or less a fast moving ball. I knew I was not a good enough shot on unpredictably moving targets to hit one of the strays without significant risk to my dog.
Instead, I carefully placed one round in the dirt directly in front of a large tree. At that, the strays broke and ran. My dog was bleeding from bites but came out OK. Mission accomplished.

I had not planned to use that technique, and don't necessarily recommend it. I think that putting the round where I did controlled its path, with a good chance of recovering the slug if that had been necessary. I suppose that was the most "harmless" direction available. In the end, I think it was the right thing at that moment.
The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up.

The threat of force is only justified when the actual use of that force would be justified. In other words if you're justified in drawing your weapon you're justified in shooting it. I wouldn't fire a warning shot for fear of hitting somebody else.

However a friend told me about a guy that had a 37mm flare launcher mounted to one of his AR-15s. He was having problems with people cutting across his pasture on ATVs in the middle of the night and tearing up his property. So finally he heard them one night and went outside and launched a parachute flare off into the air above them. Said they high tailed it outta there and haven't been back since.

Either shoot to stop the threat or keep it holstered. You are responsible for your bullets and where they end up, regardless of how good your intentions are.

Despite some peoples comments.........I personally think the only stupid questions are the ones left unasked

I certainly salute your quest for the best possible information. TAM's (The Annoyed Man) post above has some excellent links to answer your question in addition to what has already been posted.

I know it's easy to tell someone to "Do a Search" but there are many here that have been on the board long enough that they may remember specific threads pertinent to your question that your search may not find.

As they say "there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers" so fire away. Even if your search is successful on a topic feel free to ask away to get the most current opinion/information. It probably takes less than a minute for one of the more seasoned forum goers to formulate a really good search and maybe add their own wisdom.

It sometimes is also good to resurface a topic now and again to reinforce everyone's thinking on something. I think you will find almost 100% agreement within the members on this forum that the warning shots are only for the movies. In real life they serve very little useful purpose other than to waste ammo.

I do tend to see comments wondering if different posters are trolls, or undercover members of this organization, or that organization. Sometimes the member being questioned will have hundreds, even more than a thousand previous posts, and their integrity will be called into question. I don't think people are going to have so much dedication to subterfuge that they will post hundreds of posts and threads just to deceive us when the big day comes to let your true feelings out. If I had one personal observation that was not positive about this forum, it would be the tendency for that to happen. (Keeping in mind that this remains my favorite forum). I know this is true from reading almost everything that is posted in the six sub-forums I frequent, and from it happening to me twice.

If you run across a thread that you think is not worth your time, then do not waste your time. If the thread is obviously a troll, or contains inherently dangerous information, then you must act. Most of these threads, however, just do not merit the bad attention they get. Bad threads die...and they die quicker if you do not help them turn into a flame-fest.

By the way, some people who come here are ignorant...just the truth. They are not stupid, they just don't know what there is to know. If they did, they could bypass this forum all together...

no?

I totally get where you are coming from. I tend to give forumgoers the complete benefit of the doubt until they display their true colors.

In my experience, the "planted" posters don't ask near as many questions and get straight to the point attacking anyone not on their political agenda. On a couple of high traffic boards they stick out like sore thumbs. The are certainly people paid to sit at their keyboards and post on forums - just like the RIAA paid offshore organizations to pollute the Napster peer-to-peer network with corrupted files, there are individuals paid to post nothing but political views and attack all who oppose theirs.

I could be wrong but this thread seems legit.
