03Lightningrocks wrote:You folks using the word searched are putting a huge misconception out there. They are NOT searching anybody coming or going from that place! They are simply asking to look in the bag of merchandise you have purchased to make sure it has all been paid for.
What do you think "search" means??? It is a huge pet peeve of mine to be treated as a potential thief after visiting your business. I will not be "searched", period. No business but Sams has ever had an issue, they called a cop working there off duty on me and he told them there was nothing he could do unless they had reasonable suspicion.

They do the same thing at BestBuy...meh. I can see why it bothers some people, but it slides off of my back. Everyone has the right to make a personal choice to visit those places or not, but they should be ready to comply with their rules if they do. Of course, the guy who does the checking is right by the checkout lanes, and can see you pay, so I would think it would be difficult to steal too much in the space between the cashier and him...

The Fry's in Austin has a plastic wrap repackaging machine so I am a bit leery about buying computer stuffs there as I had read that they would repackage some perfect conditioned returns(i.e. no missing items) and sell them as new (not discounted).

We had one of those when I worked at Officemax for that very reason, except we gave the used item discount. The machine used a different kind of plastic so you could tell if something had been rewrapped by feeling it.

Of course, that bit of insider knowledge only applies to the Officemax in Walnut Creek, CA (and it's over a decade out of date), so who knows what a different company uses in a different district eleven years later.
I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, nor should anything I say be taken as legal advice. If it is important that any information be accurate, do not use me as the only source.

I can usually tell the difference in factory packaging and the shrink wrapped returned packaging. Sometimes the discount is good enough to make me buy the returned item. They give the same warranty as a never returned item. It seems lately they don't give enough of a break in price for me to buy the returned item.

BTW... they tried to wave me through at the Plano store and I told them I would prefer they check my bag and receipt. I told them that one of the main reasons I shop there is that I liked knowing thieves could not sneak through. :evil2:

I was once at the Fry's in Austin when they had a BIG sale going on . . . long lines, moving s-l-o-w-l-y. (never again, but that's another story.) At one point a guy waiting in line looked at me and asked in LOUD voice and hillbilly accent "Y'all wouldn't happen to have a GUN on ya, would ya?"

I froze for a second - was I printing?

So I asked "Why?"

He replied "''Cause then I could just have y'all SHOOT me and I wouldn't have to wait in this here line no more!"

Much laughter from the crowd, especially since I made a show of patting myself down and saying "Darn it, I KNEW I forgot something this morning!"

If he only knew . . .

As for searches, up to this point I've just been ignoring the bag searchers at the exit and walk past the line of people waiting to be checked; no issues yet.

I'm surprised some of you guys ever leave the house at all. Fry's isn't in River Oaks, but it isn't in a terrifying ghetto.

When the money exchanges hands, so does ownership. You wont let a Leo dutch your car without a warrant but you justify letting some minimum wage worker go through your stuff.

It is a very high crime area. It doesn't look bad, but statistically, it is in a bad area.
