Sitting on Leather Furniture

Post by terryg »

We recently purchased new living room furniture. The previous set was microfiber, but now it is leather. I have been very hesitant to sit on the new furniture while holstered for fear of damage to the set. I have left it on if only resting for a minute or two. But if I am going to be a potato for a while, I been un-holstering and placing the gun on a nearby surface.

I am interested if anyone else faces this and if you are as paranoid about it as I am?

I have 6-7 yo leather couch I have never even worried about it and slept there many times with nothing causing damage, now I don't sleep with the gun under me either as it is not comfortable. That being said if I did not have kids I would unholster and lay on coffee table.

Never any marks or other issues on my Mom's leather sofas or chairs. I'm not there every day, but when I am, I never even think about the ever-present 1911 on my hip.

That said, it's another of those "lifestyle" changes that come with being armed and aware. My wife and I are in the market for new living room furniture, and realized that between the dogs (two 100# labs) the cat (25 claws intact) and the guns (mine, and most of the friends who hang around) that leather just wasn't the wisest purchase decision.

We do have leather in one of our cars, as well as several previous ones, that never showed any undue wear from my "jewelery."

My biggest worry would be the IWB holsters with the metal clips. I shredded several work shirts and the cloth seat in my work truck before I figured out what was the cause. I switched to Kydex j clips and havnt hr any problems since. I too have leather seats in my car.
