One good use for birdshot is making wax loads. Looks like a field-expedient alternative to slugs

http://www.thefirearmblog.com%2Fblog%2F2011%2F10%2F07%2Fhomemade-wax-slugs%2F&rct=j&q=birdshot%20wax%20loads&ei=f1yTTqXkEaahsQKgi8mUAQ&usg=AFQjCNGEwqZAPXJwA623UA4me0EbQdq5JA&sig2=uvSGt7mmo1SnI_ugZYXyyg&cad=rja" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If this link doesn't work Google "birdshot wax loads"

I use the federal version of this and like it. Wife can manage the shotgun with ease.

It's a variation of the old "buck and ball" load that was supposedly favored by General Washington for muskets. The idea was that the main ball (slugs/disks in this case) would do real damage if you hit your target near center, and the shot increased your chance of at least some kind of hit if you were off some.
The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up.

So if you're firing three decent sized disks, then you have 8 or 9 red ryder bb's so you can put some eyes out while you're at it?

I can't remember where I read it but the reduced recoil will give you a more consistant pattern out of a shot gun. I myself have 3 cases of Winchester Ranger Buck ready for use
