Re: iOS 5 Release..
This looks interesting. There's an offer out there from Apple to buy back your mint-condition iPhone 4 for a credit of $200 that you can apply to an iPhone 4S. Brilliant idea, really. You get the latest and greatest for free (if you stick to a 16GB iPhone) and they can resell your used 16GB iPhone 4 for more than the 8GB versions they are making from here on out. You do the marketing for Apple by showing off your new super fast 4S, and they sell even more of them.

I'm happy with my 3GS, but may have to upgrade. Problem is, I'm about a year out from qualifying.

Just curious, anyone having problems with the install?

yes, seems you may need to attempt the update a couple of times, and/or restore the phone. I haven't gotten it to update successfully, yet.Bulldog1911 wrote:Just curious, anyone having problems with the install?

Yah, seems to be hit or miss. Got a few at work that had no problems, several others that have tried over and over to no avail. Hate to say it, but sounds a lot like a new Windows service pack releasesjfcontrol wrote:yes, seems you may need to attempt the update a couple of times, and/or restore the phone. Re: iOS 5 Release..
Got an error message implying it couldn't communicate with the iPhone server (Upgrade server?). Anyway, perhaps they're getting hit pretty hard. Now the phone has a spinning circle in the center of the screen, and isn't showing up in iTunes at all.Bulldog1911 wrote:Yah, seems to be hit or miss. I got that too. Phone seems to be stuck in a loop, now. Shows the power up apple, then briefly the progress bar underneath it, then the spinning circle, then power down, then back to apple logo again. Can't power off or do anything else. Any ideas?

Re: iOS 5 Release..
well that doesn't sound good. You try a hard reset? hold the main button and the sleep button down together for 10 seconds

Hard reset seemed to get it back to the "restore" state. Now getting this message...

Re: iOS 5 Release..
That's a problem on Apple's end. They've been getting slammed (as expected) and the servers can't keep up. News is all over the Mac sites - they just say to wait a couple of hours and try again (when everyone else does the same thing, too I guess??).

My boss got that one too. They're probably getting slammed right now. I'd try again a little later.sjfcontrol wrote:Hard reset seemed to get it back to the "restore" state. Now getting this message...

Re: iOS 5 Release..
I updated my iTunes and then updated all my apps. Rebooted the Mac, rebooted the iPhone, clicked on the Update button, and it loaded without a problem!~ I will say, though, that when it updated and shut down to restart, it said it was being restored, which raised my pulse, since I wanted to update and not restore! It went just fine, and I took my first pic with the volume button as a shutter button!
Enjoy~
Enjoy~

Re: iOS 5 Release..
Welp, this morning I went to work on updating my itunes so that I could update iOS 5 onto my iphone and ipad. I'll give my experience so that others who may have questions can maybe get something out of it:
I'm operating with an iPhone 4 and an iPad 1. I was certain that iOS 5 would run fine on the iPhone, but wasn't sure how things would go on the iPad. Turns out it works just fine. For reference, my wife has the iPad 2, and it also went off without a hitch.
Initial impressions: iOS 5 is sleek. When you first download it you probably wont notice a whole lot is different.. I really didn't. Once I got into the iPhone to see what was really happening, the difference was immediate. I got a text from a bud who downloaded it onto his iphone at the same time I did mine- and the iMessage feature is epic. It's fast, seamless, and just different enough from SMS that I noticed. For those of you who don't know how to work iMessage--it's easy. The phone does it for you. Once you send/recieve a text from someone who has iOS 5 on thier phone it automatically switches over to iMessage from SMS. Pretty durn slick if I might say so myself. Just make sure that you have the auto toggle turned on under settings>messages>iMessage because if you get out of 3G or wireless coverage, iMessage wont work, and it will switch to SMS.
Notification Bar: If you are like me and your life revolves around your iPhone, your gonna love it. I came from an Android powered phone so this was a welcome addition to my iPhone. It keeps things a little more organized, allows me to see all my notifications simultaneously (facebook/twitter/sms/email/etc). It scrolls down with your finger from the top of the screen. Again--sleek.
iCloud- Well this one I'm not real sure about. I just synced all that stuff about 2 hours ago and have been playing with it. iCoud is an interesting concept, and it's pretty amazing once you figure out how to auto sync all of your stuff with the computer. You will have to download iCloud seperately, but once you do it basically walks you through how to set everything up. I synced my iPad/iPhone with it, turned on the wifi, and watched everything go to work. Now, finally--and without my having to do things individually-- AND automatically, iCloud synced my music/pics/apps/contact so that every device I have has the same stuff on it across the board. For the first time in my life my iPad and iPhone are basically exact replicas. That was cool. Downside? I'm still not sure how this all works and dont therefore dont trust it yet. Haha.
Anyway. Thats my official range report on the new iOS 5. Anyone else notice anything I haven't yet??

Re: iOS 5 Release..
I upgraded my phone about an hour ago (took about 2 hours to get the update downloaded). ALL of my apps that I've used over the last 2+ years are gone. I suppose that's my fault, because I regard the iTunes software as something like a virus, so it stays off my computer (I'm ont of those heretics that doesn't use my iPhone for music or videos, so iTunes on my computer is a complete waste of disk space). Apparently, there's no such thing as a centralized knowledge source at the App Store that knows what I've purchased/installed, so now I'm in the "guess that app" mode as I try to recoever 50+ apps, one-by-one
So, for all of you eager to upgrade: Make sure you are on the computer your iPhone is "tied" to, make sure you've done a full backup, and THEN upgrade.
P.S. -- Oddly, i'ts only the apps that got trashed. All my photos, notes, email setup, etc were all nicely preserved and ready when I finished upgrading.
