Florida CCW holder moving to Texas..

Post by Harmon Rabb »

I am currently a Florida resident with a Florida CCW permit. In January, I am moving to Texas. I know Texas has reciprocity with Florida... but, for how long can I carry in Texas under my Florida permit once I move there? Can I do it as long as I'd like, or do I have only X number of days to get my Texas permit?

Clearly, I plan on taking the Texas permit course immediately, I just know it can be a couple months before they send me the permit.

Can anyone help?

I would think you could carry for a couple of months, but I don't know for a fact. I'm sure someone will come along soon who would be able to give you a proper answer. Welcome to Texas. :cheers2:

To the best of my knowledge, you can carry as long as your FL CCW is valid. So here's the real question: Is your FL Resident CCW still valid after you have officially changed your residence to another state?

I don't know what FL slaws are regarding CCW change or residences, but I see 3 main possibilities: Florida may cancel your CCW (in which case you can't carry in Texas), convert it to a non-resident license (In which case you can carry in TX), or leave things as they are (in which case you can carry in TX).

It depends, are you Harmon Rabb Jr. or Sr.? :patriot:

I gave the Texas CHL website a quick look, but I couldn't find anything. If you want to look yourself, or read the Penal Code regarding CHLs, the link is http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... enInfo.htm

EDIT: Like Rotten Apple said, as long as you have a valid license from a state that has reciprocity with Texas you should be fine, just make sure you know the laws of the state you will be in. It seems like you are going to have to refer to Florida laws to make sure your license is valid if you move.

I just change my address with Florida and they convert my Florida permit to a non-resident permit. That I do know.

Then you should be good until it expires.

But it's definitely a good idea to schedule yourself for a Tx permit once you have the Tx driver's license; as it gets you lots of good training on the law here ;-) :tiphat:

Do you know where you might be settling in Houston? It's a BIG town (geographically speaking).

If you are in the south end, then you will be close to the course that is taught by the person who runs this site.

My Florida permit does not say anything about non-resident on it anywhere nor does it have an address on it, all it says is"Concealed Weapon or Firearm License" with birth date, race, sex and issue date and expire date and of course a license number. So I would think if your license is valid you are good to go in Texas.

You're not required to get new plastic but you must notify them within 30 days. (Section 790.06(8), Florida Statutes)

THIS

and if you can make it to Texas for a weekend BEFORE January, go ahead and schedule and complete a class while you're here and submit your paperwork for a non-resident Texas permit, then convert it to resident permit when change to your Texas address.

No, it's more considered "West". "South" is more like Clear Lake City, League City, Kemah, etc....cities on the path to Galveston.

Just a note about which you may already be aware, but just in case:
A few things to note:
While FL has a concealed "weapons" Permit, Texas only has concealed "handgun" license ....example: brass knuckles are illegal etc.
