WASHINGTON (AP) - The Senate voted Tuesday to effectively block the Justice Department from undertaking gun-smuggling probes like the flawed "Operation Fast and Furious" aimed at breaking up networks running guns to Mexican drug cartels but that lost track of hundreds of the weapons, some of which were used to commit crimes in Mexico and the United States.

Yeah pretty fast for them. What I want to know is when are they going after the big dogs that let this program run?

The 99-0 vote would block the government from transferring guns to drug cartels unless federal agents "continuously monitor or control" the weapons.
Alas, not completely stopped.

It's stopped enough. That additional clause would allow federal agents to _properly_ conduct sting operations (i.e., there's always an agent "attached" to the firearm). While we might not agree with the laws on the books, we don't want to simultaneously pass laws that prevent the enforcement of other laws. If you think it through, this sufficiently complicates things so that something like F&F couldn't have been done without a LOT of agents being dedicated to the process, and the DOJ doesn't have that many in the field. Not even close.

They also passed the DOJ funding. I think they should have cut all funds to BATFE and cut DOJ funds by 1/3rd.
