Riding with a convicted felon

Last Saturday my Wife and I along with 2 other people were priveledged to get to volunteer at the Police Explorers Annual Competition. Anyways, I got a call from work and they wanted me to come in. We had all ridden to the event in 1 car so I told work that if I could find a ride I would come in. One of the ladies that was with us said that she could probably get her husband to come get me. The first thing that I thought about is that he had spent some time in prison, he is a really nice guy and completely rehabilitated but I was carrying. I said thanks but it really wasn't that big of a deal but I really didn't want to be carrying in his car and risk getting him in trouble. Would this put him at risk? I am thinking not since the gun would be in my possession but wanted to get clarification from all of the wise folks on here.

As long as you are in control of the firearm and there is no way he can get possesion (without fighting you for it) then you and he are fine.

The only gray area I could think of would be if the felon is still under probation and the terms of the probation prohibit him from being with people who are armed. Then it might theoretically cause him some problem, but the OP is certainly in the clear.

Not to put too fine a point on it but wouldnt that logic also prevent him from being around PO's who are armed?

OP, I think you are overthinking this. You are legally carrying a firearm which is not accessable to him. You are not engaged in any sort of criminal behavior. Its no different then having him over to your house where youve got a closet full of guns.

Actually, it is. If you do not have the guns properly secured where he can't get to them without forcibly entering the containment location, then he is in violation. If they are accessible to him freely, then it is violation. In the case of the house and guns being unsecured, it might be a stretch, but they could potentially charge you the homeowner with providing a felon access to firearms.

Bottom line, you have to make sure you have control over all access to firearms anytime he is around and that there is no way he can readily gain access to them. This means they need to be locked in a safe or secured area and not laying around the house, loose in the car, or in your sock drawer.
