Advice? low recoil 12 ga 00
Advice? low recoil 12 ga 00
I always used Double X Winchester buck as it contained more pellets, but now am needing to switch to lowest recoil 1a ga shells (or sell it/trade for a 20 ga)
I'm thinkin Winchester might be manageable ...
Sole use will be home defense now I don't hunt with it anymore, already sold all my extra barrels.
So, range would be 10-20 feet max as my rooms aren't super huge... I'm not concerned with pattern at 20 yards ...
Anyone have experience with these or recommend any better lower velocity/recoil ones?
Any others that are trustworthy, good and/or magical?
I know with those pistol grip only shotguns, there's gotta be some.

The Federal low recoil 9 pellet 00 fight control load is considered the gold standard of low recoil 12 gauge loads. Any low recoil load will perform reliably at inside the house ranges.

Wow...interesting. Gun Tests did exactly that kind of test in this month's issue! The winner: Fiocchi Reduced Recoil 12ga 00 buck. They tested 6 different loads too, and it beat them all handily.

I saw that too. I bought some Rio low recoil 00 buck last year and it is good also. Here's a link.OldCannon wrote:Wow...interesting. Gun Tests did exactly that kind of test in this month's issue! ...though the spread won't be a lot at 15-20', I load the first 3 slugs in my house guns...if an intruder has grabbed my wife or son, I want the accuracy of the slug, with buckshot the gun would be useless...I follow with buckshot...nothing exotic, just slugs...

Get a goo semi-auto and shoot full power stuff out of it.

Re: Advice? low recoil 12 ga 00
I sold my Remington 1100 semi, the problem I have with Semi autos is I can't shorten the buttstock/ make a folder/collapsible stock....Wish they made a smooth-bore 20 gauge Judge (it'd be an AOW I suppose) but I have a Rem 870 12 ga.Zoomie wrote:Get a goo semi-auto and shoot full power stuff out of it.
several youtube videos I saw on low recoil loads (there's only a few there) and the Box of Truth and other tests show only about a 3.5" to 5" spread at 20' muzzle to target- 12 ga cylinder bore/no choke ... I live alone but niece stays here a lot.... she knows the plan thoughspread won't be a lot at 15-20',
Thanks, I'll order some ... I saw some good reviews, and only 1 bad one from a guy who said it didn't work in his gas operated Saiga semi-auto...OldCannon wrote:Wow...interesting. I guess I'll probably order some Winchester, Fed and Fiocchi and try them outMoJo wrote:The Federal low recoil 9 pellet 00 fight control load is considered the gold standard of low recoil 12 gauge loads. Any low recoil load will perform reliably at inside the house ranges.

I own a Saiga 12ga shotgun. No matter what you feed it, it turns its nose up at you in spite. Then whatever it likes one day it decides it hates the next.RPB wrote:Thanks, I'll order some ... Re: Advice? low recoil 12 ga 00
Rather than change ammo, I suggest perhaps changing out the buttstock for a Knoxx Specops. I put one on my 870, and it is the absolute best gun accessory purchase I've ever made. It makes 3" magnum slugs feel like 2 3/4" birdshot loads. It's really amazing. Also, the stock is collapsible M4-style, so easily adjustable for fit.

I have a couple youtube videos up of me shooting 3" magnum slugs through it. Note the complete lack of muzzle rise that would be very pronounced with these loads and an ordinary stock.

Re: Advice? low recoil 12 ga 00
Good suggestion thanks
but, I'd hate to throw away my butler creek folder, I could modify it/ better recoil pad etc, but
It isn't really a shoulder or muzzle rise issue ... it's sorta 2 issues I have with recoil
right wrist arthritis + finger stiffness and
Imagine having no left hand and inserting left wrist/forearm through the hard plastic "loop" foregrip to pump it; recoil there bruises a bit see photo below
I guess I could pad it with foam rubber and duct tape
So, even with a better recoil system/stock, I'd still go lowest recoil shells probably ... they should be plenty good for a range of 10 to 12 feet. ... and allow pistol grip folded stock firing if needed in a tight hallway maybe without as much pain in both hands.

I'm shopping for a tactical 20 ga too ... slim pickins for a 1-handed person... tough to rack a pump using only a left wrist, and semi-autos are so darn long. I cut the butt shorter, but you can only cut so much with their recoil system tube in the but stock, unless it's a Saiga ...and I'm not positive I want a 20 ga Saiga for home defense (and they are none to be found)
So, Butler Creek, and no one else makes a loop type forend any more, so I'd have to fasten/screw a leather/ fabric strap to rack a pump if I got a new shotgun ... or get semi-auto and cut it down some, but minimum butt stock lengths are limited by tube/spring thingy in the buttstocks of semiautos, except Saiga types.
I can't find a Saiga 20 ga, and if I get a Saiga 12 ga ... I'm back to full power ammo, and right wrist/finger issues, and fastening a strap on the foregrip for control with my left wrist/forearm.
It's a headscratcher
... .someone needs to sell me a reliable 20 ga Saiga
Well, ... maybe a 20 ga CIRCUIT Judge revolver rifle/carbine if they'll make them, they have them in .22 and .410

Thanks, that's probably a way better idea than a 28ga pistol with no ammo to be foundspeedsix wrote:...Dear Santa: http://www.americanrifleman.org/article ... ssbergSA20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And, the Mossberg SA-20 price is about what I was going to spend on Ammo.
Thanks.
(I know I'll end up with the low recoil ammo AND a Mossberg SA-20 ... who could ever have too many calibers/too many gun types in an ammo shortage? )

Gentlefolk,
If, and when, the need arises to shoot your shotgun in the house; I expect that recoil is gonna' be the absolute, very least of your concerns.

Re: Advice? low recoil 12 ga 00
True, I just want to eliminate as many potential minor distractions as possible so I can devote full concentration to any more urgent task. The wrist/forearm caught in that forend loop and hurting could be distracting trying to rack it again, or discard it while grabbing a different weapon, or reloading ... just looking for best options.Oldgringo wrote:Gentlefolk,

I'm sure I'll end up with the 20 ga for that reason ... but doubt I'll sell the 12 ... never know when I might need it if I decide to dove hunt again... or if 20 ga ammo is scarce some day..
