What packet?

Post by Breezebro »

I took the CHL class and passed. I received a 2 photos and a Certificate Of Training signed by me and the instructor, that's all.
I am trying to figure out the application process sequence?
Reading this forum and elsewhere I keep seeing references to a packet, where do I get one?
I see no place that ever mentions sending in my Certificate Of Training. Do I?
Man I'm lost, the real "test" seems to be the application process.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can apply online these days at https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Or you can go to http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administra ... /index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and print a CHL-78A, CHL-85, CHL-86, and CHL-6 if you prefer to mail hard copies.

When you apply online, you will get a checklist identifying the items to send, which may vary based on your circumstances.

I am extremely surprised that the CHL class did not furnish you with the packet and directions on completing it. Sounds to me like the class only went half way...

Yeah, I think we were short changed but I can't complain about the training, it seemed to be thorough.

It has been a while and I'm up for renewal within the next six months, but I don't remember getting much instruction on any of the forms that weren't specifically pertinent to the class.

We always discuss the paperwork at least twice - once before the test and again at the end of class when students ask just to make sure. They also know to call me if they have questions later. I thought all classes would do similar.

If your instructor is on the ball, and if you have done your homework before class, then he will give you your photos (in an envelope), and your completion form. If he is really on the ball, he will even give you the pre-addressed envelope to send everything in to the DPS. If you have done your homework, which is getting your prints done at L1, and completing your application online, then all you have to do is drop the envelope in the mail. I always advise to get the application done, paid for, and your prints done before class. The main reason for this can be found all over this forum. As soon as your class is done, you want to get that in the mail so you can start checking on your status ten times a day. Why delay that little bit of joy by having to finish your app and get your prints done after you complete your class?

I waited for about seven weeks after my class to get fingerprinted and then submit the application. Then I had the joy of checking my online status.

Obviously, I wasn't in a hurry. I was already carrying everyday on a non-resident license.

In my class we took the time to complete all the paper work and took the prints and pictures. All I needed to do when I walked out was write the check to DPS and put a stamp on the envolope.

That's what I thought we were gonna do. I was surprised to find out there was so much more to be done cause the instructor was so thorough on everything else. My wife and I took the class with neither of us ever having fired a handgun before. We've spent time at the range and bought 3 guns that we like.

I don't believe Texas uses the packets anymore. My instructor told me "Texas will send you your packet" I actually wound up going to the police department in my town and asking them for help because my CHL instructor was completely disconnected with how the application process works now.

The easiest avenue to take, is to apply online, this will give you a check list with a bar code printed on it that you mail in with the application, course completion and photo's. It has became a fairly expedited process now. My buddy got his since they started the online application and received his plastic within 3 weeks.

Thanks! That does seem like the thing to do.

Did the check list ask you for any of this or is this old info?

Residence History
Criminal history info
Photo Holder/ ID Picture
Authorization for Release of records Affidavit
Knowledge of Laws and Eligibility Affidavit
CHL-100
Disposition Docs

I am getting so much conflicting information, but I think it's cause the procedure changed through the years.
One member sent me his phone number with an offer to walk me through it.
I plan to call him after this holiday weekend.

https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/chl/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Here is the web address to the online CHL application.

As for what the checklist asks for, from what I remember it consists of the following:
1. Photo Holder with signature
2.Two copies of the same photo (here in Bowie, the CVS pharmacy actually does CHL and passport photos for around 13$
3. Course completion certificate

If you do your application online, its a real easy step by step process and any forms it asks for are available on that same link. It will also offer you the opportunity to schedule electronic finger printing. (I would definitly take advantage of this so you dont have to go and get them redone if the standard ink cards dont come out clear enough the first time.

Hope all this helps, feel free to email me if you need more help.
