just a reminder, this Sat is the WHIDPA sat match. The Match Director is a old bald drunk with a warped mind and a evil spirit that stays up late at night trying to figure out ways to make shooters say "WOW" or "x!ft$####"

there will be two Halloween theme scenarios, a few moving targets and a bunch more fun scenarios. approx 100+ scored rounds 7-8 scenarios.

I want to learn more about IDPA, I would like to get more into it but I don't know where/how to start.
I live in the Katy area and looks like the closest place where I can find people gathering for training and matches is "West Houston IDPA", which is like 30 miles away anyway.
Looking over their website it looks like the "newbies" are welcome on Wednesdays at 5:30 sharp, problem is I get out of work at that time and then I have the 30 mile drive

What about Saturdays? Can one go and learn/train on a Saturday? Because on Wednesdays I will never be able to show up a 5:30.
Any ideas? Does anyone know of a place closer to Katy where I can get in touch with IDPA???

Hey Leo,

Of course new shooters can come out on Saturday's!!! And it's encouraged. Garry and crew at WHIPDA are a great group and put on a safe and fun match every 1st Saturday of the month and Wednesdays as well. As noted above in Garry's post, new shooter briefing is at 8:30. Typically, new shooters show up at least 30 mins prior to the start of a match so they can receive a directed walk-through regarding safety and the commands that they need to know.

On wed nights, we try to get the hammer down at 6pm just so we can get the match done in a timely manner. With new shooters, we need to give them a shooter's briefing and make sure that they know what is expected of them and the general safety issues.

New shooter's are always welcome (Wed or first Sat....or second Sat of the month for 3-gun). The main thing for us is that we expose you to the sport in a safe and fun manner. If you have shot other shooting sports, then it is a short briefing. If not, it is a little longer. One other way might be for you to come out and watch one wed night, get the briefing, maybe shoot a stage to see what it is like and then you can show up at 6pm the follow (or another) wed night and be ready to rock and roll.

Feel free to contact anyone at the WHIDPA website and they also will be willing to assist you. We want safe shooters that want to have fun.

I get out of work at 5:30 or later during the week, I could ask to get out one hour earlier on a Wednesday but I won't be able to do it very often. Saturdays I'm usually free, I was thinking about showing up this Saturday just to watch and see how others do it, learn a bit from watching others since being a newbie I won't be able to shoot.

How much does it cost to get in? Do you have to pay if you are not shooting? How much?

There's no cost to show up and watch all the fun going on, so feel free to go out Saturday. Actually, once you're ready to "shoot" your first match, the match itself is free. Just be forewarned, once you go out, it will be hard to stop going!

So if you have the time, definitely go out this Saturday and get to know where the range is, how things work, other shooters, while spending time with those who enjoy shooting sports!

Great, I see that on Saturdays it starts at 8:30am, is that the time the match starts or the time people show up? What time should I show up this Saturday?

Sat match: You will have to pay the range fee and insurance but that is all.
We will be having 7 stages with approx 100+ scored rounds (bring about 150 and should be good), eye and ear protection, gun, holster, 3 mags (if two is all you have will make that work for first time) and mag carriers if you have them (if not-pockets will work for awhile)

We do hammer down at 9am so 8:30 is good for new shooter briefing. If you want to help set up, then we will be there from 7am on.

I can promise you that we will be shooting some things that you prob have not seen or done and will be fun.

150 rounds sound like fun, and like I need to get a 9mm!!!

I have a Glock 23 in .40 cal which is my daily carry, a Galco IWB leather holster, five 13-round magazines and a 2-magazine holder.

Would it be ok to get a 9mm conversion barrel for my glock in the future if I want to really get into IDPA? Or you can only shoot with what you carry? (I plan on carrying .40 regardless if I get a 9mm barrel.)

Here is the official answer from the IDPA HQ- Robert Ray

A member may replace a barrel of one caliber for one of a different caliber as long as the gun remains safe and functional. This will be legal for all gun models, however if the gun is not in the original factory shipped caliber it will not be legal for SSP division.

Example: A member may replace a Glock 35 barrel (.40 caliber) with a 9mm barrel. This gun would be legal for ESP but not SSP.

I went there today, had a great time, I really sucked at it but I enjoyed it very much. I am confident that with time and training I'll do better.
