Primers, Powder and Bullets

Post by thatguy »

Two questions, where is the cheapest outlet to buy bullets, primers and powder in bulk and is there a law on how many primers I can have in my home (I heard a rumor that ten thousand was the max)?

I've gotten some good deals on powder and primers at POWDER VALLEY Bullets are hit or miss (pun intended) good prices at Precision Bullets and if you catch them on sale Midway.

Acording to an ATF agent I spoke to the only regulation on ammo and primers are fire codes.

I am no firecode expert, but when I took the time to try and wade through it, it appeared there were restrictions on the # primers and the # lb. powder but that they were for an R-3 residence, which was a multi-tenant building like an apartment complex. I don't personally believe that a single family dwelling has the same restrictions. I'll also freely note that that is my belief but I could have misinterpreted to fire code.

All of my online primer and powder purchases have been through Powder Valley, Inc. as well. I've also read that if you buy online primer/powder from MidwayUSA and some other retailers, it is actually shipped from Powder Valley.

It also is worth keeping an eye on Grafs. They'll run specials where they waive the shipping and hazmat charges if you buy 32 lb of powder, and you can pile on another 32 lb of additional primers or powder.

I've been involved in several group buys, where we'll combine the orders from anywhere from 4 to 20 guys to minimize shipping costs. There was one group buy in December of 2008 where we bought almost 150,000 primers alone . . .

The $25 Hazmat fee alone makes a big difference with volume. Purchase 1k of primers at it adds $25 per k to your cost. Purchase 50k of primers and it adds $0.50 per k to your cost.

Do y'all get a price break based on volume?

See http://www.berrysmfg.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for bullets and some other stuff. I've been quite satisfied with their prices, products and service.

I have been buying my powder and primers at Ts down in Texas City. Cheaper there and no hazmat fee.

You can get better prices on Berry's plated bullets elsewhere. He knowingly charges full retail price for his bullets there so that he does not undercut his distributors.
