Good place in Houston to get a holster?
Good place in Houston to get a holster?
I'm looking for a good IWB holster for my new officer's model (1911) carry weapon. Are there any locations in Houston that carry them? Or am I pretty much doomed to order off the internets?

...I've bought a coupla dozen holsters locally...but prefer to order them from the manuf....I'd recommend Don Hume Leathergoods in Miami, OK...they'll send you a paper catalog or have an online one...quick service...their holsters are great quality and at about 1/2-2/3 the price of some bigger names...been using them since about 71...

On the north side there is Spring Guns and Ammo. They have good leather holsters by Tagua and the selection is decent. When I picked up my OWB for my 1911 I had to root threw there display to find it. I think it is a decent holster for what I wanted.
This is the one I purchased. http://www.taguagunleather.com/new/open ... olster-p21" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

+1 On Don Hume one of the best deals on holsters out there. They are my "go to" place for holsters.

I just want to be able to try it on before I buy it. I have an STI Shadow, and I want to be sure it fits, since it's kind of an "off brand" officer's 1911. I'm sure it's CLOSE to an ultra carry, it's just not the same.

Comp-Tac is right here in Houston and I love carrying my Govt model 1911 in their Minotaur. However, they do not have a store front. It is telephone/web sales only.
However, I think the last time I stopped in Spectre Firearms, they had a bunch of Comp-tac holsters stocked. Give them a call and see if my memory is failing (They might have been Crossbreed SuperTucks, this was several months ago).

Well off brand in the sense that it's not a name that people instantly think of when the word 1911 is mentioned (colt, kimber, springfield). It's one of the higher up specialty companies (I would hold them equal to wilson combat, personally), which would be more like lotus for your analogy.MoJo wrote:STI "off brand"APynckel wrote:I just want to be able to try it on before I buy it. After using the Raven Concealment holster for my STI Trojan I will never buy another brand again. The wait was long but worth it, this OWB Kydex holster fits better than my IWB Comp-Tac or Cross Breeds that I have owned/currently own. It's hard for a gun shop to carry holsters for every gun out there much less than to carry several brands of holsters. I understand your wanting to check fit, but I would find a holster you like and do a Google search to find someone using it on your gun then I would buy online.

Woodland's Tactical has several brands, and usually a decent selection as well. This is where I got to test drive a gun belt for the first time. They sent me to the "facilities" to try it on with my side arm.

Re: Good place in Houston to get a holster?
Collectors firearms on Richmond has a huge selection of 1911 gear, including Galco, and Comp-Tac, and some semi-custom makers.
The STI frames will fit quite nicely in standard 1911 gear, this from personal experience. My Rogue requires a bit of screw-down adjustment in my comptac slide, but works just fine.
f
One downside to the comptac gear at Collectors is that they tend to lean toward stocking the slide style, which is designed to fit all lengths of the 1911 pattern. This isn't a problem with the officers model, but does leave commander and government models hanging out the botttom.
At worst you can handle em, and the order exactly what you want, knowing what you're getting.

They do carry Comp-Tac Minotaur, with a 1911 model in stock. They also carry Bladetech, Tagua, Galco, Desantis, Don Hume, and a couple of other brands.

If you're on the NW/Cypress area of town check out AMSS Guns & Ammo and 10 Ring. They're both on Jones Road between FM1960 and Grant Road and carry a range of holsters.
