It is an insanely rare event for any justifiable, defensive uses of firearms to make a national news story. Local, yes; national, no. Thanks for posting these, though. This sort of thing happens pretty often. I always read the stories like these when I get my American Rifleman magazine.

I heard on the news today that homicide just dropped out of the top 15 causes of death for the first time since, I believe, 1965. I would like to think that legal, law-abiding :fire would have something to do with that...

Good luck getting the press to admit that, or even entertain the thought as possible. In their fantasy land, we're all SO much safer when only the crooks and criminals are armed... :grumble

I also saw the Brady Bunch put out some claptrap about the record number of NICS checks don't translate to firearm sales. They counter that NICS checks can be made for a myriad of reasons and purchasing a firearm is only one of them. In fact, they say many people who pass a NICS check end up deciding not to purchase a firearm after all and leaving the store empty handed.

This was, of course, their way of countering any argument that a record number of firearms in the hands of citizens does not cause crime because we all know that any non-police officer who owns a gun is a homicidal maniac just one road rage (or disappointing fast food drive through experience) away from happening.

They've never been above lying (although I'd like you to cite their statement if possible, please). It's _illegal_ to run a NICS check without a firearm sale associated with it. It's ironic, actually, that the Brady Bunch would claim this when it was THEIR LAW IN THE FIRST PLACE that put NICS into place. FYI, the FBI site specifically states this for appropriate use of NICS (http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/enroll" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;):
- Authorized use of the NICS is limited to the purpose of obtaining information on whether receipt of a firearm by a prospective transferee would violate federal or state law.
- FFLs, their officers, employees, agents, and/or other representatives are permitted to request background checks of the NICS only for the authorized purpose.
- Accessing or using the NICS, or permitting access or use of the NICS by another, for any unauthorized purpose is a violation of federal law, sanctions for which may include criminal prosecution; a civil fine not to exceed $10,000, and/or cancellation of NICS inquiry privileges.

...true, but it's not unusual for someone to fill out a 4413, let the store call it in, with the info on it specifying what kind of firearm, of course, then change their minds and not buy one after getting approval or while in delay status...and that's not illegal...so that part about what is above could be true...the first part about their statement is typical anti-bun cwap!!! they're grasping at straws trying to say that responsible citizens aren't waking up and arming against the troubles ahead...the anti-gunners lose where people think instead of just emoting...

Right. My point is that it's very much the exception, rather than the rule.
