Scoring Targets

Post by BrianSW99 »

Since the CHL-100 only indicates a Pass or Fail, do you score the targets that are obviously passing? When I remember back to my own CHL class, the instructor only calculated a score for the targets that were questionable. I scored every target in my first CHL class and it seemed like it took a while for a class of only 6 students. My next class coming up is looking like it's going to be large-ish (>12 at this point) so I'm wondering what everyone else does. I don't think this topic came up at the instructor class.

In the case of some of the shooters I get you can't score a target with the X and 10 rings shot out and no hits anywhere else on the target. Yes, I had a young Coastie (female) who did just that last Saturday.
Her husband did almost as well he had one shot in the 9 ring. The only time I actually "score" a target is if it looks like they may not pass. I haven't had any failing scores on the shooting but I have had a couple that were in the low 180'S.

I always score all targets. For the obvious ones, it takes very little time or effort.
I rarely seem to have students who don't know someone else in the class, so it's fun to let them compare scores.

Like others, I normaly only score if it looks questionable. AFterall, you can tell after the first 40 rounds if someone has qualified already.

If I have guys that know each other or spouses that want to be competitive, I'll get them an exact score. It can be a lot of fun. I can score them pretty quick. Cardboard targets makes it a lot easier. I can pull them out of the stand and mark hits with a pen as I count. Beats chasing paper targets in the wind. :thumbs2:
Carry safe and carry when and where you can. I'm just sayin'.

After the first 40 rounds, I often use the target carriers to bring em back to the firing line for long enough to see if they have at least 175, then run em out to the 15 and don't worry about scorin' em further. Unless the particular students are real interested in specifics - like obtaining a perfect score. Lots of 248s and 249s. But last week had one more with a 250, making only numero 50 to do so in front of me in 16 years.
