Unanimous SCOTUS says police need warrant for GPS tracking

Post by A-R »

Good ruling: agree with Alito (and Sotomayor, much as I hate to admit it) that the ruling should go even further, prohibiting cell phone tracking and tracking of "voluntary" or "consentual" monitoring technologies by the government & police.

A good ruling in this case, but some important caveats if you read the full article..
Sotomayor agreed. "It may be necessary to reconsider the premise that an individual has no reasonable expectation of privacy in information voluntarily disclosed to their parties," she said.
So... if you all ow Google to know your GPS location on your Android phone, then it's possible that law enforcement can also know your location without violating today's ruling......

Privacy... will be a battle for the rest of our lives..

Good ruling. However, too bad this lets the bad guy off the hook.

This does not let the bad guy off the hook.
It makes sure the bad guy is hooked for doing bad things, by making it harder for you & me to get hooked for leading our own lives in our own way.
