CHLPP vs. CCL vs. [pre-paid legal]

Post by Ruark »

I'm trying to decide which legal protection plan to obtain, and it seems to come down to:

Concealed Handgun Legal Protection Plan (CHLPP)
http://www.chlpp.com/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

or

Concealed Carry Legal Services (CCLS)
http://www.concealedcarrylegal.com/index.cfm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

or

[Pre-paid legal service] ([pre-paid legal])
http://www.[Pre-paid legal service].com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There seem to be a few differences:

CCLS and [pre-paid legal] also cover criminal trial expenses, whereas CHLPP only pays through the grand jury proceeding. With CHLPP, if it goes to a criminal trial, you're on your own. I have no idea how CCLS and [pre-paid legal] determine whether or not a criminal trial is worthy of their assistance. I'm sure they wouldn't help you if your use of deadly force was clearly unjustified.

[pre-paid legal] covers ONLY attorney's fees, and nothing else (expert witness fees, private investigators, deposition costs,, transcription expenses, court fees, bail, and bonding fees, attorney travel costs, office staff costs, postage, faxes, copies, or overhead). I get the impression CCLS and CHLPP do cover these.

CCLS is the only one that clearly states that your attorney will be sent straight to the location of the incident, a service that I personally find very comforting. [pre-paid legal] and CHLPP only mention telephone access, at least at first.

I think it would be very useful to members of the Texas CHL Forum to have some comprehensive discussion and information about these three organizations and hopefully some clarification of just what they do and don't do.

There is a lot of information on all of these in numerous threads. Frankly, I'm not interested in another one that winds up being an opportunity for sales pitches. This is especially true after seeing a number of inaccurate and/or misleading statements in eNewsletters.
