Re: ...Mother Doesn't Seem to Know Best...
a state agent who was inspecting lunch boxes decided that her packed lunch — which consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips — “did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines,”

The worst part is that we're talking about Southeast North Carolina.
This would be no surprise in Kali, but in the land of Pork BBQ in vinegar sauce, this is astounding.
If that lunch is bad for you, I'd be dead by now.
I anticipate swift attention to this matter in favor of less nanny-state intervention.
I am not a lawyer. This is NOT legal advice.!

I'd love to hope that you are right but the public outrage over such incidents does not seem to reach the fever pitch that would be required for a change. To me, that is even more scary than the original over-reach of governmental authority. Too many people seem to say "ho-hum" and go back to their lives.RoyGBiv wrote:....

I'm sure that the poor mom involved doesn't even share my sense of outrage. I'm not sure that anyone can even point out under what authority of what law a public official can search a child's lunch bag (especially that of a 4 year old and without some external probable cause) and then over-ride the parent's choices without some substantial evidence of abuse.
We can only hope that some crusader will convince the mom to make this some sort of test case. I really don't think that will happen, however.

Unfortunately, I think the courts have already ruled that a school may override a parent's choice in this matter. What makes it even worse is what they replaced the child's lunch with something worse than what she brought because she didn't have a vegetable in her lunch bag.chasfm11 wrote:I'd love to hope that you are right but the public outrage over such incidents does not seem to reach the fever pitch that would be required for a change. Let's see...
American Cheese, processed 1 ounce .5 Grams Carbs, 9 Grams of Fat 106 Calories
Turkey breast, processed 1 ounce 0 Grams Carbs, 2 Grams fat, 51 Calories
Breads, all types, regular sliced 1 slice (1 ounce) 13 grams Carbs, 1 Gram Fat, 60 to 80 Calories (x2)
Banana 1 medium, 26.7 grams Carbs, .6 grams fat, 105 calories
Apple juice unsweetened, 6 ounces, 21.7 grams carbs, 0 grams fat, 87 calories
Total about 62 grams carbs, 12.6 grams fat, 490 calories
School lunch if they ate ONLY the chicken nuggets 7.5 Grams carbs, 10 grams of fat, 160 calories. Not to mention there are saturated fats in the fried nuggets as well as higher cholesterol.
I'm not a nutritionist, but I do know healthy food vs. food that is not (but tastes better
)My opinion is let the growing and active kid eat the other meal that is MUCH healthier than fried nuggets.

Cost of food wasted by the school
$2.00
please deduct the $1.75 for the school plate lunch from the emergency room bill I expect you will reimburse since my kid is allergic to "nuggets" Also, her doctor said she needed potassium as her levels were low, therefore please return the banana you stole to avoid unnecessary police involvement.

If it wasn't so far and the cost of diesel so high, I'd go find me a Smithfields right now. Boy Howdy, I missed that pulled pork BBQ in vinegar sauce {*sigh*}.RoyGBiv wrote:....The worst part is that we're talking about Southeast North Carolina.

I'm going to ask a VERY simple question with a not so simple answer: how long are folks going to put up with this sort of malarkey? Each incident that is acquiesced to begets more incidents...each one tells the "wise and learned elites" that they got away with it and they can get away with more.

I would be in the process of methodically tearing the entire school administration apart, meeting by meeting if our 8 year old granddaughter had been involved in such a matter. I have a lot more time than they do and they would end up changing before I gave up.

People have been screaming about it and some have taken it up in courts, only to be shot down by liberal judges.

I am so tired of being told 'Ya can't fight city hall'. Just sit back and take it. Don't rock the boat.
Sure you can't fight city hall, but maybe you can find some way to pee on the steps.
