I don't think they're the only ones going overboard. It even extends to related industries. This is definitely a competitive period where companies will do a lot of experimentation to see what flies.
My personal observation is not to get too caught up in that mindset of being the first. A lot of dealers, manufacturers, etc. will try to implant the mindset that you are dealing with last year's technology and you need to get with it. Contrary to popular belief, I think some of the change is much slower than some would have you believe. Upgrade of old technology gets ignored, only for the company to get caught up in unproven new technology. It's sort of like buying the first year of a certain model car that is supposed to be innovative. The cardinal rule is to always wait a couple of years.
The size issue does not change as much as some might think either. Things can only be made so small before significant functionality is lost. A good analogy is the trend regarding smaller and smaller pistols. What do you want to trade-off? Number of shots? Accuracy? Reasonable grip? I find a lot of people don't examine this when it comes to computers. They will get a laptop without thinking that they really don't need the portability. A more valuable purchase might be a larger computer. Larger components mean more durability, readability, storage, etc. It is, again, another tradeoff.

Picked up a Samsung Galaxy Note a couple of weeks ago... Man this thing is the best thing since a 1911!!! Bigger than a phone... Smaller than a Tablet... I call it a Phablet. I generally get 3-4 days of battery life too and its FAST Dual core processeor and 4g LTE...
