I will see it, but I am well lets say less than in love with past Disney science fiction.

From the previews, it does appear that George Lucas borrowed from it.

Let us know if Disney is true to the books. When John Carter met Dejah Thoris, he said “She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments, she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure.”

That movie has a lot of buzz. I've heard people talking about it all week.

Based on Burrough's "A Princess of Mars", written in 1917, before he even wrote the Tarzan novels.

Loved the books! One of my favorite series of all time. I hope the movie does the first book justice!

Let us know if the movie is any good. I gave up on Disney movies long ago, got tired of the 'let's kill off a parent' plot of most of their movies.

Shrug. There really aren't that many story variations in most cultures. There's only about 36 (some say just 20), with variations of theme and character expansion. Disney is not better or worse than most, excepting the fact that their stories need a more rigid path to appeal to a broader audience (bad people are genuinely bad, good people are always good, etc.).

"Rapunzel" didn't involve either of her parents being killed, so... there :

I read the John Carter books when I was a kid. I do want to see the movie, but there's no way on God's green earth that I care about any movie enough to go see a midnight show.

Star wars episode 3 came out when I was in high school. We watched 1&2, went to the midnight premier of 3, then went home and watched 4-6. Dumb? Oh yeah. Fun? Absolutely!

Just finished most of the Mars/John Carter series by ERB and besides wondering how they were going to treat the attire in general, Dejah Thoris' in particular, and such, I also have to wonder why John Carter's hair is shoulder length rather than close cropped as specified by John Carter himself many times.

Of course I don't see Lynn Collins as quite coming up to the standard set by the incomparable princess, but I have read all of those books several times since my childhood, and I still retain my own imaginary view of what she looks like, which, coincidentally enough, just happens to correspond to my first (late) wife's looks.

We will be going to the early show after church on Sunday.

Drove to Austin (from Houston) in the '80's with my brothers, saw Starwars 4, 5, and 6 in a six hour marathon at a downtown theater near the capitol. Loved it.
