The EM railgun fires a heavy, metal projectile that travels at 4,500 mph to 5,600 mph, which is over twice the speed of sound.

Where did all the fire come from?
Did you notice the wobble (fishtail) in the projectile? (Which kinda looks like a big wrench)

Re: Velocitas Eradico
The fire would be superheated air.
The wobble (yaw) bothered me too, I wonder how they could accomplish any level of accuracy over any significant range with the odd shaped projectile and that amount of yaw. Maybe it's planned to be an active projectile with onboard steering and gps or some sort of designator.

Yeah, that projectile looks kind of weird. Don't know if that is the actual projectile they will use or some kind of test projectile to prove the concept. Might need to add some rifling to the barrel to prevent some of that fish tailing.sjfcontrol wrote:Where did all the fire come from?

Re: Velocitas Eradico
The projectile went through a barrier prior to the wobble. However, if the wobble is endemic to the projectile I would suggest the projectile be called a 'Webull' because we all know: Webulls wobble...sjfcontrol wrote:Where did all the fire come from?

I suspect whoever's at the target might argue that "... they don't fall down!"DocV wrote:The projectile went through a barrier prior to the wobble. I found the video fairly confusing. Sometimes there's fire, sometimes not. Sometimes the projectile goes thru a billboard (?), sometimes apparently not. Sometimes there's audio, mostly not.
Must'a been pretty heavily redacted...

Those projectiles are intentionally designed to slow down quickly and are the "test" rounds.sjfcontrol wrote:Where did all the fire come from?

The actual sabot rounds it shoots are long and pointy... but I would imagine are some trouble to stop

Why doesn't this weapon have an English name that rolls off the tongue more easily?

If you have been to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, or Six Flags in St. Louis, think of Mr. Freeze on steroids. LIM/rail technology is pretty cool. Even looking at it for space launches!
I have a friend from high school who was vice president of design for Six Flags during the Batman and Mr. Freeze introductions, and was instrumental in getting the LIM technology ride in the parks. If you look at the license numbers on the police cars in the mural by Batman are his kid's birth dates.

They used the "Binomial Nomenclature" system for the name like you would name animals. Genus Species using old latin (as in roman not hispanic) words. Translates loosley to "Speed Kills" or "I Quickly Kill"surprise_i'm_armed wrote:Why doesn't this weapon have an English name that rolls off the tongue more easily?
