TXDPS Ride Along

Post by snatchel »

Last night I did a ride-along with the TXDPS here in San Angelo. You will never hear me say anything bad about those guys, ever. They are a professional, effecient, effective bunch! Compared to ride-alongs with Sheriff and Local LEO, they are extremely busy. I think we pulled over somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 vehicles. 1 DWI, 1 PI, and several other little things.

Anyhow, I always thought that they were hardcore about pulling over people for minor infractions--I was wrong. Yes, we pulled over anyone speeding more than 5 mph, but I think that was more than fair. He gave out 3x as many warnings as tickets. As long as they werent going too awefully fast and their insurance and paperwork was good they got warnings.

All in all, I really enjoyed the ride-along, and will be doing it again next month. I am thinking that the DPS is a definite option as far as employment!

snatchel: I assume they checked your Texas DL/CHL before the ridealong.

Were you forbidden from carrying your gun(s) during the ridealong?

Oh, nice one. I bet he was disarmed.

Yeah, It was in their written policy that we aren't allowed to carry any weapons, including CHL's. But I wasn't completely disarmed. I had a very well equipped M4 and Mossy 500 next to my seat--so no worries.

Well, I'm sure someone told you that you could not carry your CCW, but I'm also curious about the written policy. Did it comply with 30.06 with the correct wording?

There was no 30.06 post written in the form I signed, but it did specifically forbid me from taking any kind of weapon, including those that have a CHL. I thought about it, and figured that was "oral notice" enough. I also knew I wouldn't be unarmed...so I didn't fuss about it.

I wouldn't have carried either. I was hoping that at least the DPS would have gotten it right.

I'm not questioning your decision, I'd have done the same. But you ARE aware that a form cannot be "oral" notice, right?

Did the trooper show you where the release buttons were? I've worked on a bunch of police cars, that stuff can be tricky. Some have locks you can open with a handcuff key, if you have one. Some are just some hidden electric lock you'll never find.

Yeah, "oral notice" isn't worth the paper it's not written on and if its written on paper it's not oral notice. If it is written on paper the law says exactly what it has to say.

What? :headscratch

Oral notice is covered in the :rules: law and carries the same weight as written notice. It is even easier since the wording doesn't have to be word for word. Also, not all written notice must conform to the size requirements of 1" high block letters. It could be printed on the back of a movie ticket and you would have been given enough effective notice. Does anyone check the backs of your movie tickets?

Thanks for the report. LEOs perform a difficult job and are often taken for granted. People can be very nasty/defensive even if there is no need to be. Ok, so there are some professional LEOs and some not so prefessional LEOs--but the bottom like is that they are performing an important job and should not be treated badly--even if some people believe differently. I fully support LE. :thumbs2:
