Whats a good Small of the Back Carry

Post by DavidLKelly »

It has been a while since I have been on here so be gentle please. I travel alot and I am looking for a good small pistol to carry SOB maybe. I have looked at some derringers but I am not crazy about them. Not sure if I want a revolver or auto so any sugestions would be great. My daily carry right now is either a Ruger P345 45 caliber or a Karr 9mm, The 45 is just to bulky and heavy for what I need and the Karr 9 is just a little bit for SOB. Oh by the way I wear a light weight western vest and I am a cheapo  . Thanks for any imput.
He has put a new song in my heart!!

The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God,
and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

I would think any single stack handgun... regardless of caliber would work fine. If by travelling a lot, SOB is a pain... or at least in my experience. Sitting down, it is impossible to draw SOB..

I like SOB when i'm walking around or on my feet all day, but for the most part it is just too inconvenient.

All that said.. if your looking for something easily concealable and relatively comfy, I would go with a single stack auto, definitely not a revolver.. the cylinder gets kinda thick and cumbersome. YMMV

On occasion I carry an Ed Brown Kobra Carry in MOB - well, more of a 5:30 to 5:45 rather than a 6:00 - covered with a sport coat. MOB/SOB works fine but I prefer other carry positions.

As to a pistol, my p238 and my LC9 work well with SOB/MOB for me.

Kimber Stainless II in a Galco SOB holster sitting at about 5:30 works perfect for me. No back issues, comfortable all day behind the wheel (I drive for a living), and a nice easy draw (even while seated).

:tiphat:
Thanks for the responces everyone. I also drive for a living and as far as body type I am 6'4" 230... I am trying the Karr CW9 right now and I had not thought about the 530 position. That might solve the problem with it. I was thinking of trying the Ruger LCP380... Does anyone have any experiance with these?

If you drive a lot - get a crossdraw. Too many bad things with SOB carry - trying to get to it if attacked (esp if flat on your back), someone behind you taking gun, comfort when sitting, a fall on the gun, etc.

I have HAD to use SOB carry in the past and will find any other way to carry before I go back to it. If you are sitting that hard lump pushing against your spine and tail bone will become uncomfortable fast. If you fall onto your back for any reason you will be injured. Any time you bend forward it will print and stick up like a sore thumb. Accessibility when carrying in the 5.-5.30 position is not great when seated in a car with a high console or arm rest but it is much more comfortable and accessible than the SOB. If you are of a larger stature making cross draw difficult, a small gun in an ankle holster is as good as any when seated.

I started out carrying SOB with a Glaco, then I switched to this for my P238:

I carried my P238 SOB for a while, but the clip was ruining my King Ranch leather seats. For some reason, I tried the 11:45 position...I will never go back. I now also carry my CW 9 and 40 at 11:45. it just seems to work better and conceal much better. Driving is more comfortable also at 11:45. YMMV

I like the looks of that setup. What make of holster is that? Should I assume that it is a right hand crossdraw set up? At 11:45 do you cover it with shirt tails or untucked shirt? I have been struggling with finding the most comfortable/concealable trade-off for my 238. I often end up pocket carrying it but I would sure like to find something that works as summer nears.

That holster is a Bullard holster out of Azle, TX http://store.dmbullardleather.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Keep in mind that in a real fight, your chances of ending up on the ground greatly increase, and can make it difficult to get to your gun. Many police Depts forbid SOB carry to its officers due to risk of spinal damage in any kind of fall.
