My 5 yr old found the 1911

We are super vigilant in our house about having the guns locked up because we have 5 1/2 yr old twins. My brother in Law lives on our property in the mother in law house. We have a shooting range on the property and the twins have recently started shooting with us. Up till recently they showed no interest in guns (except when they make pretend ones out of legos). I do not allow toy guns at our house since we have a house full of real guns. Hubby and I last week had a conversation about removing a firing pin out of one of the guns and leaving it out with the nanny cam to see how the twins would handle finding the gun. I occasionally go over with them what to do if they do find a gun. Well, (long story longer).... aforementioned BIL left his loaded cocked 1911 on a table in my living room last night. Well, after school on of my twins happened upon the gun. He did not touch it and ran out to tell me it was on the table. Can I say I am so proud of my 5 yr old for doing the right thing and I think I shall castrate my BIL if he EVER does anything like that again.

Provide a gun safe for anyone who is visiting and armed. Guns go to the safe, if not on body in a holster. I can't trust my son if he found a gun. He started playing war games on Xbox 360, like a Call of Duty 2, a WW2 game.

PC §46.13. MAKING A FIREARM ACCESSIBLE TO A CHILD.
(b) A person commits an offense if a child gains access to a readily
dischargeable firearm and the person with criminal negligence:
(1) failed to secure the firearm; or
(2) left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should
have known the child would gain access.

(d) Except as provided by Subsection (e), an offense under this
section is a Class C misdemeanor.

Oh, if your child happens to mention anything about this at school, be prepared for a visit from CPS.

Much the same. When I had kids in the house there was not a loaded gun accessible and my kids were trained. At one point, my son came to report to me that he had found a gun in the house, a replica Kentucky pistol that was on display in the living room. He was rewarded. He had never really paid attention or noticed it before.

Never underestimate the resourcefulness of kids though. When we had an incident with a possible home invader, really just a drunk from the bar around the corner who couldn't find his own home, after I got the situation defused, I went upstairs to find my sub-teen daughter standing in the upstairs hall with my shotgun loaded and ready. The shotgun had been locked in the gun cabinet, and the key for it had been "hidden" in my dresser drawer, and the ammo was kept in a lock box in the basement, except for two "emergency" rounds hidden in the back of my wife's lingerie drawer in her dresser.

Shortly after that I changed my philosophy and habits about keeping the guns in the house.

That is why I educate my children about everything. If I don't and they happened upon a gun at a friends house - those are the kids you hear about on the news.

Luckily BIL is moving out next month and he will not ever live down that stupidity!!

We made sure that my 5 yr old knew how proud we were of him making the right decision. They know you only shoot a gun at the gun range and only with ear and eye protection. They are also aware how to hold a gun (finger off trigger). Education is the best defense. I don't want my kids to be afraid of guns I want them to respect them.

As long as he's been taught properly, a video game should have zero effect on his gun-related behavior.

There was a news story done a few years ago on children that played "violent" video games and were obsessed by them. They then put these children in a controlled situation to shoot a gun and one of the boys actually broke out in tears after shooting the real gun.

My 5 yr olds are learning and I never want to be in the situation where I can not trust my child if they found a gun. That is why education not ignorance is the answer.

I agree with your thoughts on our children finding guns in other people's houses. If our children know about guns they will know to stop another from playing or they will know to leave.
