Ann Coulter Has it right again

"Gun control laws were originally promulgated by Democrats to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. This allowed the Democratic policy of slavery to proceed with fewer bumps and, after the Civil War, allowed the Democratic Ku Klux Klan to menace and murder black Americans with little resistance. "

"As the Klan found out, it's not so much fun when the rabbit's got the gun. "

Alright, I have to profess complete ignorance regarding the statements that Coulter made regarding Democrats and the Klan.

Can any of our august-body of forum-members point me towards some literature that may support her assertion? I sure would be interested to learn more.

Well I am not going to do the googling for you, but I am well aware of that history between the Democrats and the KKK. Just ask Sen. Robert C. Byrd.

OP, thanks, I would not normally have seen that article if you hadn't brought it to my attention. I also like the last phrase of the article as it is a powerful truth:

". . . gun control is always a scheme of the powerful to deprive the powerless of the right to self-defense."

ACCURATE...these men agree:

"[The Constitution preserves] the advantage of being armed which Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation...(where) the governments are afraid to trust the people with arms."
--James Madison, The Federalist Papers, No. 46

"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. A military force, at the command of Congress, can execute no laws, but such as the people perceive to be just and constitutional; for they will possess the power, and jealousy will instantly inspire the inclination, to resist the execution of a law which appears to them unjust and oppressive."
--Noah Webster, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution (Philadelphia 1787).

" ... to disarm the people - that was the best and most effectual way to enslave them."
-- George Mason, 3 Elliot, Debates at 380

"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress ... to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable citizens, from keeping their own arms.... "
--Samuel Adams

Coulter's comments should be evaluated in light of the 19th century Democratic party platforms. Post Civil War Republicans (think Republic here, Yankees) were by and large carpetbaggers from the north. "Democrats" of the period would be today's Republicans of the south, and also those most likely to be Klan members. Coulter seems to have missed some points here.

While I deny being "august," Purplehood, I might suggest that if you look at her words in context you will realize that she was talking about the Reconstruction era immediately after the Civil War. The Southern Democrats then, who refused to believe they had just lost a war, were not the Democrats of today. Similarly, the Republicans of today are not the Republicans of Abe Lincoln's time.

The Texas state legislature was a part of the southern strategy of adopting tough gun-control laws at that time in order to keep guns out of the hands of blacks.

The following articles might begin to answer your very good question:

I was kinda worried about the distinction between the parties then and now... so the casual reader may come to the conclusion that the Democrats of today are the Klan-supporters of that era.

I'm betting that's how MSM will take it and will immediately dismiss the article as garbage.

Those of you that have lived in Texas a while may remember times when it was considered heresy to be a Republican. We switched to a solid "red state" when Reagan came into the picture, before that we were primarily Democrat. Phil Gramm was one of the more-famous party switchers who jumped to the GOP in something like 83 or 84.

There. A little not-too-distant Texas history for some of ya :tiphat:

You are absolutely right, Purplehood. She may well have been intending such a misunderstanding. She has certainly done it before.

I grew up in the south. I've known a lot of people over the years. I've known bigots of several races. I've known Democrats and Republicans, I've aligned with both parties over the years. I've even known some KKK members. One thing every bigot I've known over the years has had in common was that they were a dead dog Democrat. If you're not familiar with the term, it means they'd vote for a dead dog as long as it ran on a Democrat ticket. That, along with Al Gore got me to reevaluate my party affiliation.

So I'd kindly ask you to provide some kind of substantive proof of your claim that Republicans in the south are most likely to be Klan members.

Look, I know Sen. Robert C Byrd (D) was the longest serving senator and he died at age 92, but even he was not from the 19th century! "rlol"
