That's what happens when you play too much Grand Theft Auto and don't know the difference between that and reality...
FWIW, IIRC, AFAIK, FTMP, IANAL. YMMV.
Re: Human Predator Training
CHL/LEO is dead on point with his comments, which I can confirm from my own LEO experience in another part of the country.
Regular folks, particularly in the suburbs, tend to think that everyone is sorta like their neighbors and the people at work. They have no clue that there's a whole other world out there populated by vicious predators who stalk people like animals, and torture and kill for fun, hatred, and the feelings of power it gives them. I can't begin to count the number of times stunned victims or witnesses said to me, "I never thought something like this could happen here." Trust me - it can happen anywhere. There are clearly some places where violence happens more than in other places and we can manage risk to some extent by planning around that, but that's little consolation if you're the one it happens to in a place you thought was safe.
The reporting on the offenders in this double homicide incident was exceptionally good in that it took a hard look at the people behind the crime and published the results in a way that gives citizens who've been lucky enough not to come across one of these predators before a glimpse into the offenders' mindset and what they can expect if they ever meet up with one.
The shooter's statement that he had made up his mind to shoot his victims long before he had even met them should also be an eye opener for the folks who think they can "nice talk" their way out of a violent street crime, or come away unscathed by doing everything the slightly misguided armed robber demands.
With these offenders, compliance is irrelevant. It's seen as a sign of weakness, an enhancement to their thrill, and actually helps them rationalize their crime by telling themselves the victim "deserved" it for not being prepared to defend himself. (Note the shooter's remarks that the victims shouldn't have been where they were.)
For all intents and purposes, there is no compassion or moral compass inside them to appeal to. This is confirmed by the shooter's total lack of remorse and his crass dismissal of any feeling for the innocent family members the victims left behind. This should be enlightening for those who are into learning the lessons of history so they don't have to be repeated.
I'll leave the discussions of how the bad guys got that way to folks who are a lot smarter than I am. However, I will suggest that, as a practical matter, folks should plan on managing encounters with these types of offenders in a manner similar to what would be necessary to deal with an close up encounter with a hungry, angry, rabid lion in the jungle. At that point there are only two possibilities: The situation will end with you as either the dominant predator.... or food.

Lest anyone think that our local talent is unique, check out the link below to see the newly emerging details from the wanton killing of a female UNC student several months back:My hackles rose just looking at that video.
It is sad that there are more of these animals out there. My situational awareness will be increased as I drive home from work today.

It's confirmed just as thoroughly by the video of the other one who expressed surprise, remorse, and compassion for the family -- they planned to act this way. It doesn't matter how they "feel" afterwards.Excaliber wrote:CHL/LEO is dead on point with his comments, which I can confirm from my own LEO experience in another part of the country.

You are correct that "how they got that way" is entirely irrelevant to handling such attacks -- just as much as it is irrelevant how a tiger became a tiger when the predator is stealing children from your village.
It might be useful if you run a zoo, or if you wish to correct the conditions that produce them, but it is irrelevant at the point of attack except to remind you that you must expect no mercy nor human consideration.

I generally think I'm pretty tough, but I couldn't finish watching the video...I'm having trouble thinking that's human. I'm not sure why we'll waste taxpayer money on a trial. . .it's more like a diseased animal that needs to be destroyed.

Clinical research sponsored by the federal government during the Nixon administration conclusively linked media violence with violent behavior in those who watch it.That's what happens when you play too much Grand Theft Auto and don't know the difference between that and reality...

Somebody needs to start a running tally on what it will cost society to deal with this individual from the time he was arrested until he is finally put to death - jail cost, his legal representation, the cost to prosecute him, all the appeals costs, etc. All that taxpayer money being spent when common sense tells us to quickly try him, and then quickly flush him from the gene pool.
In our western heritage times during the late 1800s an animal like this would have been dealt with very swiftly. If he had a trial at all (due to his confession and overall demeanor) he would have quickly found himself swinging from a rope. They would had never spent the money or time in housing him in a prison as they would have used their common sense and instincts and determined that would have been a total waste - there was nothing to redeem.I'm not sure why we'll waste taxpayer money on a trial. . .it's more like a diseased animal that needs to be destroyed.

Re: Human Predator Training
Just saw in the San Antonio Express News that one of these monsters has been convicted:
http://www.woai.com/news/local/story/Ma ... spx?rss=68" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
DALLAS (AP) - A man convicted over a 2008 robbery in Garland that claimed the lives of two Christian music record producers could be sent to death row.
The penalty phase was scheduled Thursday in Dallas for 20-year-old James Broadnax of Texarkana.
A jury on Wednesday convicted Broadnax of capital murder in the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Stephen Swan of Carrollton. The other victim was 28-year-old Matthew Butler, who owned Zion Gate records.
Both victims were gunned down, in a parking lot, after leaving the studio on June 19, 2008.
Broadnax and his cousin, Demariums Cummings, were captured hours later in Swan's car during a stop by Texarkana police.
Broadnax still faces a capital murder charge in Butler's death. Cummings is also charged with both killings but has yet to be tried.

Re: Human Predator Training
The thing is, how do you get this info out to the masses? And then how do you deal with the fact that people just dont care?

It's too bad these external news links are all now broken.
The importance and value of this thread is no less than when it was first posted.
If anyone can locate the videos etc, please post and share. Thank you.

Death Row is appropriate. I hope he's being fast-tracked.
