Contractor I don't know wanted to tour my house

So, its 12:10pm and the doorbell rings, I go to the door and see some thick built super tanned white guy I don't know standing there. I was about to open the door when I noticed the tattoos on his hands/knuckles and decided I would just talk to him through the windows on the door. He claimed his company was the one that "rebuilt" out house before it was sold and he wanted to take a look around to see how it turned out. I was working at home so I told him "I'm working right now so No thanks, sorry" and he left. I was debating on whether to call the police or not. The guy really gave me the creeps. I found it very odd that this rough looking guy would show up in the middle of the day asking to come into my house. I am glad my wife wasn't home alone then. Even if this guy was legit he has no business going to my house asking to look around.
Of course my gun was in my pocket the whole time, but since he looked like he outweighed me I decided not to chance it.
Also, i did end up calling the police non-emergency number just to let them know what happened, in case this guy is going around casing houses. If he were such a great contractor why isn't he busy fixing another house?

Ya did good, nice situational awareness. Whole situation sounds fishy to me...I would have called the non emergency number as well and had the cops come try to find the guy for a nice chat.

Kind of funny. When I was a child my grandparents owned a house on Cape Cod. Years ago, when I was young and foolish, I was visiting Cape Cod with my wife and young son. Being a fairly small geographical entity, it was inevitable that we would pass my grandparents' former house, and I decided to just walk up and ask if we could see the place.

No one was home.

That is why I answered the door. I work at home, doing tech support for my fathers software company. Even if i'm in the middle of a phone call I'll put the customer on hold for a moment to answer the door and get rid of whoever is there as quickly as possible. I would rather put a customer on hold because someone is at the door than because someone is breaking in the back door.

I have lived in many houses and whenever I'm visiting my parents I sometimes go drive by a few of them to see what they look like now. I would like to ask the current residents if I could see the house, but I know it's just too weird. I have a lot of great memories from those houses.

I, too, would call the non emergency line to inform them of someone that appears to be casing the houses to see who is and who is not home during the day.

I have been on crews that have built hundreds of broadcast transmission, repeater, microwave and telecom sites. I have never gone back to any of them to "have a look around" unless the company who owned them paid me to go back and take a look around.
That guy was casing your home and it is good that you answered instead of just waiting for him go away. Now he knows someone is home during the day.

Yeah, and if they wanted, I'd also provide them with video clips of him at the door and of any vehicle he might have parked in the driveway or in front of the house.

So, how long have you lived in yoru home, and was it ever 'rebuilt'? I am 99.99999999999% sure this guy was casing it, but wondered if the 0.00000000001% his story could at all be legit?
