Wife completely unaware I was carrying

Post by Senior94 »

Received my CHL in the mail today. Wife and I had some shopping and stuff to do out in town, so figured I would carry without letting her know I had it with me. We went to lunch, then to Academy, then to HEB, then home, and back out to another store. Once we were home for the last time, and putting things away, I told her that I would consider my "Wally walk" to be complete. She looked at me and asked if I was carrying, and I pulled up my shirt to show her I was. She was astounded. She said she had no idea I had it on, and had even given me a hug at the store, and could not feel it.
I told her that was what was meant by "concealed" and figured if she could get that close to me and not know I was carrying, then everything was the way it was supposed to be.
I did learn that the holster that I had purchased for my SR9C allowed too much of the gun to be exposed and did not have a side guard body shield, and would rub against my not so flat stomach and become uncomfortable. Will be ordering a new holster next week, as it will get here before I lose enough weight to not need it.
All in all, good learning experience.

I read this thread and left and came back and left and now I am back.

Let your wife know when you carry and vice-versa she should let you know when she carries. That way you have a plan if something should happen. Discuss what ifs, have a plan - team tactics are fun to think out and helps train the mind. If the first time you think about what to do is when confronted with evil, there is no time to think only react.

Thanks for replies and suggestions. Thought about the t-shirt and figure that other than the summer, that would be the easiest fix. During the summer may be too hot for me.
As far as letting my wife know, I think that makes perfect sense, and would be the smart thing to do in the future. If she knows I am carrying, it makes a difference how she may react to a given situation. My thought for the first time out was to see if it was detectable, but now that I have found out, that does not need to be the case in the future.
I appreciate this forum and the feedback that it supplies, because it gives me insight with people who are more experienced than myself in carrying. Thanks for sharing the information.

My overall best holsters are the CrossBreeds Horsehide ones. They really help soak up any sweat, and they do not rub on the skin. My Comp-Tac is also pretty nice.

...mine never did...didn't trust her not to blab...never spotted it nor saw me with it...my boys were armed at home and she never knew that, either...she'd have had a hissy...didn't agree with guns/self defense...we were married 25 years before that changed...

add some leather to the holster you have instead of getting a new one
Some parents say it is toy guns that make boys warlike. But give a boy a rubber duck and he will seize its neck like the butt of a pistol and shout "Bang!"......George Will
