What does this mean?

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

What does this mean?

Post by Heartland Patriot »

I received an email from one of those organizations that say they are for firearms rights. Of course, they wanted money (as does every organization). I did a quick scan through and a lot of it was fairly common stuff that a lot of conservative firearms owners might agree with, in general. They talked about a few state candidates that aren't in my area and whose names I didn't recognize. But the one thing that did catch my attention was the statement below. Can someone on here who is good with the state laws please explain this one to me? I really don't see what the laws of other states matter here in Texas unless the weapon is stolen and the person buying it KNOWS that, or something of that nature. Thanks in advance.
In 2009, Texas passed a law making it a felony if you acquire your firearm in virtually any way that might be perceived as being illegal under the laws of New York or any other anti-gun state.

Sounds like propaganda to me... I would toss it, and make a mental note of the Al Sharpton wannabe*** that sent it to you.
(***"Al Sharpton wannabe" = A person or organization trying to create the perception of a problem where one does not exist and use it for their own personal/organizational gain.)

"Perceived as being illegal"??? Made me laugh out loud. "rlol"

Still would be interested to know what 2009 law they are referring to and in what way they are abusing it.

THAT is what I want to know...I like to read things for myself. I may have been called dogmatic, but I do like to base my dogmatic approach on the information I acquire... ;-)

This organisation wouldn't have a name would it? If nothing else would you PM it to me?

Now that I know who the originator of the email is, I can give you an idea of what I think they are attacking. They are attacking legislation from 2009, specifically what was HB1188 before it was signed into law. That legislation is what let Texans puchase long guns from non-contiguous states, and if you buy a long gun from in another state you are subject to their laws since that is where you are physically at.

Okay. Sounds pretty straightforward. If you are in another state, you are subject to their laws whether its buying a gun or getting busted for a DUI or whatever. I guess I don't understand why there was a need to make a new law in this state to say that. Not a big deal to me, though. Thanks.

Before that legislation was passed the federal government would not permit Texas Residents to purchase a long gun in a state that did not share a border with texas.

Okay, makes even more sense...it was getting rid of the old law and just letting folks know, IF they buy a gun in another state, then they would have to deal with the laws of the other state. Makes perfect sense. I think I will ensure that particular organization's emails go straight to the junk folder from now on...have a great day. :thumbs2:

So who is the offending organization that is sending out misinformation? Inquiring minds want to know.
