Happy Father's Day

Post by WildBill »

It's been 41 years since my father passed away on June 12, 1971. In addition to the normal things that a father does, he introduced me to guns, target shooting and reloading. This is one avocation that I continue to this day.

I wanted ro start this thread and share a special photograph. Since shooting was a very special part of our life, it's strange that this is the only picture that I have of my dad shooting. The photograph was taken by my mom in El Paso, Texas around 1952. My dad bought this Colt Officer's Model .38 Special from a gas station for $35. I still have the gun, holster and the receipt.

Well it hasn't been as long since my dad passed away but, he too had a Colt Officers Model Target that my sister now cherishes.

WB, That's a great photo and memory for you I know. I only have one gun from my dad. A Fox 12 ga double that he bought at Abercrombie and Fitch in NYC a few years before WWII. I took it after he passed away last year at 93. The hang tag was in the gun case for years, but got lost some where. I don't have any pictures of him shooting or even holding a gun except for a picture taken in India during WWII. He's holding an M1 Garand beside a tiger he had to shoot. I think about him and that story often.

Yes indeed for those of us who have only the memories of our fathers this is a poignant day for honoring them. I have the shotgun I bought my father in the hopes that he could join me in the field. Unfortunately arthritis in his shoulders made shooting the even the gas operated .20 guage too painful for him. I still use it for woodcock when I get the chance.

To all you fathers here, I wish you a HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
