I don't think I was ever indifferent to poisonous snakes, but I was really impressed with rattlesnakes when I was Boy Scout and a (Indiana) Conservation Officer who was also a snake expert came to give us a talk.

He brought several bags with snakes (all kinds, not just poisonous) in them, and would dump them out on the table and pick them up as he talked about them. With the copperhead and the water moccasin, he picked them up bare-handed -- he was able to distract them and just reached around behind their heads to snatch them up.

But when he got to the rattlesnake, he said, roughly -- this guy is too fast, i have to use a hook for him. And you could see that the rattlesnake could strike much much faster than the other two poisonous ones. Or maybe better, couldn't see, because that head was just a blur when it moved.

That's still a vivid memory, how fast that snake was.
