Lyman Turbo Sonic 2500 Ultrasonic Case Cleaner

Post by Napier »

I bought the subject cleaner, described here

http://www.lymanproducts.com/lyman/ultr ... leaner.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

a few days ago and have since cleaned several hundred cases with it. It is Lyman's mid-priced cleaner, with one ultrasonic transducer and a heater. The instructions are excellent, my only complaint being that it does not warn that their branded case cleaner will discolor nickel plated cases. With their cleaning concentrate it will clean modestly dirty cases on its longest (eight minute) cycle. Really nasty cases take up to 48 minutes and may never get totally clean. I tumbled before cleaning and got far and away better results than using Iosso or Birchwood Casey brass cleaners. I found that the manual's cautions to use distilled water and not to stack cases not to be true. On sale at Cowbella's for $109.99, the same as at Natchez, I think it was well worth the expense. And you can clean gun parts and reloading dies with it also with a different solution. Of course the wife was along and I promised faithlessly to clean jewelry and watches and eyeglasses and camera lenses and....

I have been looking at them for a while now but never pulled the trigger yet ;-)

If I bought one, it would have to be big enough to clean pistols or gun parts in.
I have read online that may people have used all sorts of home made brews for cleaning stuff.
No idea if they really work, but I'm sure something could be found that is cheaper and works.

Have fun with it and make sure you keep the peace and clean your wife's stuff soon...!!!! :thumbs2:
She will hold you to it if she is like mine, but its all good.

To clean a full pistola frame you would need the model 6000, mucho dinero more. Truth to tell, I think a sonic cleaner is an extravagance because I haven't noticed in reloading for casual shooting that dirty primer pockets and case interiors make any difference. Main degredient in the cleaner appears to be citric acid. Let me generalize your kind advice: ALWAYS KEEP YOUR WIFE HAPPY! Because nowadays you just can't seem to get much in trade for a good used wife.

I understand about the size, it just would be nice to have one that I could use like that.
Not that I can spring for the deluxe model.

I'd like to try my hand at making one if I could find the transducers at a good price.
I like doing stuff like that.

If you just got to have you brass very clean and shiny, I have heard very good results in using the SS pins (tubes?), but you need a rotary tumbler not the vibrating type. I'd like to try this also, but I have a lot of money in the system I use now. I have a Burr-King 150 commercial vibrating tumbler. It does a great job and I can put a lot of brass in it and clean them in record time.

I still want an ultrasonic cleaner one day, they have new ones out all the time these dayZ..... ;-)

Right now, I'm waiting for Fall or Winter, it's too hot in my shop right now..Gotta get a 220v A/C....( and there is more money to spend ) IT NEVER ENDS...........>>>>>>

Thanks for sharing the details of your own reloading mania. I can relate. After a while it becomes not about saving money but about the sheer mindless joy of reloading. Someday an heir will inherit your rig for nothing and REALLY save all the money reloading you hoped you could!

Question from a reloading newbie............. what would be the benefit of the ultra-sonic cleaner versus the traditional vibrate with media as it realates to cleaning brass cases? I understand the other benefits, just wondering if it is better at brass......

You can get this cleaner for $30 from Harbor Freight. It's a rebadged Chicago Electric (china made) cleaner.

I tried ultra sonic case cleaning. Not worth the time required. Can't clean as many cases, and not as well.

If you want a GREAT way to clean cases, SS tumbling. After I went SS wet tumbling, I'll never go back to vibratory. I keep my ultra sonic to clean my guns, however.

Yes, it becomes crazy at some point. I KNOW I have spent more money than I will get in actual returns, BUT it's a hobby to me, not a money saving thing.
I JUST LIKE IT...It's fun, relaxing and keeps me on my toes....Don't want to mess up an expensive gun or my fingers.

Not sure if this would help, or maybe you have already seen this?

Look under "Chemical Case Cleaning Solutions" at the end, it has something for an Ultrasonic cleaner.
( I have NOT tried this, just passing it along , you be the judge )

Good Luck, and have fun.
