You must not be familiar with the MPQ-88 cartridge then. It was in the 007 stories...the gun fired special cartridge that contained, you guessed it, _another_ cartridge. The rear of the second cartridge contained a micro-gyroscope that, when it detected the fired cartridge was about to terminate its ballistic arc, would fire the bullet in the second cartridge after reorienting to the original point of aim. This doubled the ballistic distance of the pistol and allowed any "00" agent to accurately assassinate with a pistol at over 100 meters.
Actually, I can't back that up. Pretty sure it just means there are idiots at that museum.

Don't know about that being unrealistic. I saw this happen with a CHL student who was putting 9mm rounds in his .45. The whole round was expelled out the barrel and would go about 10 feet.
