Last month Apple asked that the standards group EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool), which is responsible for rating the recyclability of electronics products drop it from its rankings.
In making this move, Apple is signaling that it won’t let future design decisions be governed by those seeking to uphold environmental standards.
I finished my contract on my iPhone and dumped it. Nope, not getting the newest and greatest. Finished with paying out the nose for Apple & AT&T outrageous prices. I will just do my web stuff at home on my computer.
I have gone back to a non-smartphone (Samsung Eternity - touchscreen) and the cheapest Non-Data Voice plan. That's all I need.
The iPhone was a interesting experiment for me, but I have no desire to continue paying what amounts to the same as the electric bill for the house on a "Smartphone".
I'm not siding with the "Greenies" - just finished with Apple.

It's not so much being anti-green as it is they want the flexibility ob design that the standards would not allow. Apple was one of the companies that started the EPEAT.

Just a quick note about this statement. You are not (never were and never will be) paying "outrageous prices" to Apple. For one thing, Apple has nothing to do with what your carrier charges for data. For another, there are iPhone carriers all over the world (except for the US) that allow an iPhone to be on their network w/o a data plan. Like the iPad, the iPhone is fully capable of shutting down cellular data and only using WiFi. But the carriers (AT&T, Verizon, & Sprint) decided to require a data plan in order to make more money. And they do this with almost all smartphones, not just Apple.

I know you are correct. In many other countries, the options for cell phone usage are MUCH more varied than they are in the USA. The phone will often cost you more, but the cell service itself is cheaper...that is the tradeoff.

Not quite correct........
I understand what you are saying about the Carrier Data Plan. But.........I did pay Apple 599.00 directly to them (thru the Apple Store) for the iPhone 4.
Phone made in China, cost them about $50.00 to make.

Closer to 200 and a vast majority of the iPhone sales are subsidized by the provider. I didn't pay anywhere near that for any of mine.

Yep. Less subsidization but more options. Which makes sense actually. If a carrier isn't going to be able to recoup the $400+ cost of subsidizing the phone and making a profit, why should they subsidize so much?
Interesting side note.... I used to work for Apple as a Senior Advisor in the Mac and iOS departments. I can't tell you the number of calls escalated to me where the customer was irritated because they (or a friend) dropped their iPhone on concrete, in the pool/toilet, etc and ruined it. Then we'd inevitably get the "so I've got a $200 phone that doesn't work and you want me to pay $199 to have it replaced?!?!?!" argument. I loved explaining to them, "No. You have a $599 phone which was damaged by you/your friend/whomever, and Apple is offering you the ability to replace it at only $199. If you would like, I can transfer you to AT&T/Verizon/Sprint so that you can see if they have other options for you, but I can tell you that unless you are eligible for an upgrade, they will most likely charge you the full $599 to get a new phone." It's amazing how people change their minds (and typically get a lot nicer) when they realize they are getting a $600 phone for $200.

Actually, the cost to make the iPhone 4 is around $200. That does not take into account R&D costs, shipping, packaging, marketing, paying for Apple's facilities (stores, call centers, offices, etc), employee salaries, and the list goes on and on. The largest cost of any technological product is customer/technical support. This is especially true with the iPhone, especially considering it's customer base.
This is a Glock 40. Fifty Cent. Too Short. All of them talk about a Glock 40. OK?
I'm the only one in this forum fool enough - that I know of - to shoot himself with a Glock 40.
I just set up my mom with StraitTalk. $45 a month prepaid, unlimited everything. It works perfectly on the unlocked iPhone she bought. No contract, half the price, uses AT&T towers, and it's unlimited. When my contract expires, that's what I'm going to do.

Beware of the word "unlimited". A few examples, one I am on an AT&T "unlimited" data plan yet when I go over 3 gigs in one billing cycle my data is slowed by about ten times, also Cricket recently got the iPhone and their "unlimited" plan only includes 2.3 gigs of data before they slow you down. This practice should be criminal if you ask me.
