Disarmed
I thought I would share my observations of being disarmed during a recent camping trip.
My wife had an upcoming birthday and she decided that she wanted to go camping with the family, a great idea I thought. My oldest sister owns a Casita, a small pull behind camper with a frigid ac. She and my Bro-in-law offered to set it up in a location of my wife's choice, an act of total awesomeness.
My wife began searching and settled on a beautiful spot on lake Lewisville. When she told me where we were going to be staying the night, a sudden wave of dread went through me. It was on Corps of Engineer land.
Now, I was at first somewhat surprised at my own initial reaction. Was it really such a big deal not being able to carry for one measly night? I tried to convince myself that it wasn't. I didn't mention my trepidation to my wife, this was her day and I wasn't going to ruin it for her.
I have not been disarmed since I started carrying, save a Ranger game or trip to the post office. Perhaps, I thought, I could carry anyhow. I could leave it locked in the car or something. In the end though, I ended up doing what I'd imagine 99 percent of us would have done and I VERY reluctantly left it locked in my home safe.
We had a great time on our excursion and I know my wife had a great time. Our kids had a ball swimming in the lake and froliching in the 'wild.'
I too had a wonderful time, but it was like being in another world of sorts. I saw EVERYTHING differently. People stared, dogs snarled, and bumps in the night reverted to the stuff of children's nightmares. And I left a bit angry at my government for making me choose to leave my family a bit more 'exposed' or become a criminal.
I learned something though, I am not normal when disarmed. I am leery, suspicious, and judgmental. I have finally observed my right to bear arms from outside, and now feel it truly god given.

Lovely choice, isn't it? I hope yall had a good time, and I'm glad you didn't need it when you didn't have it!surferdaddy wrote: And I left a bit angry at my government for making me choose to leave my family a bit more 'exposed' or become a criminal.

We used to love to camp in COE parks. There is a nice one on Lake Whitney. Cedar Breaks on Georgetown Lake is nice, too. Now we don't go to any of those any more. It is amazing to me that I can carry on Federal land in the National parks (except the buildings of course) but cannot carry at the local lakes because every one of them is COE. Why am I treated differently at Vicksburg than Lake Lewisville?
We need to all get on our Congress critters and get this fixed in 2013.

I feel your pain - recently experienced 5 days in DC of the Washington variety. I felt naked and the world looked a whole lot different - sounds were louder, lights brighter. We do our best to be alert, but something about not having my side arm and being in that town with people everywhere ramped us up! Even my daughter was on heightened alert - commenting several times on how oblivious everyone seemed.

Re: Disarmed
Since Lake Waco, Stillhouse, Georgetown etc etc do not welcome me ... I'll fish the river between them, so people visiting the ARMY lakes will have fewer fish which I and other TEXANs bought and paid to stock in THEIR lakes through the TPWD.
The rivers, under the Brazos River Authority, like LCRA, are not USACOE ... but don't cross the line in the water painted with invisible paint marking the USACOE boundary at the above the upper/below the dam at lower ends of each lake.
The USACOE does not know the GPS coordinates of their own property, there's no boundary sign sticking up in the rivers, and maps are only approximate they say so they can't tell you where their boundaries are ... but don't paddle into their area.
I absolutely refuse to pay a park entrance fee to those people.
They would not tell me under which bush to hide/conceal/store my guns near their entrance, before entering, until I came back out, (since it's illegal to have in the car on their property too since the TEXAS MPA Motorist Protection Act for even unlicensed car carry does not apply there on their Federal Property)
If CHLs and licensees refuse to support them, but go to places which treat us as adults (Including visitors from other States who are licensed) then tourism at nearby towns is affected in positive ways near STATE/NATIONAL PARKS AND NEGATIVE WAYS AT ARMY PROPERTY, such that local businesses/chamber of commerce and cities feel an effect of the restrictions (and the ACOE gets no entrance fees) ... well ... as the old song goes .. "There I go dreamin' again" that people actually pay attention or actually "think analytically"
I often put my arm under my pillow ... that couldda been a rough wakeup with a sharp hatchet under there if it wasn't in a scabbard of some sort...

Re: Disarmed
Judged by twelve or carried by six.
There are unjust tyranical laws (and we are not talking about laws here - "regulations") that warrant a decision whether or not they are to be obeyed to ensure you and your family's safety while you exercise all of the freedoms enumerated in our constitution and BOR.
Governments seem to make illegal any activity that they deem suits their purpose while thumbing their nose at our rights.
Your decision.

Where's the ACLU when you need them?
The Army interferes with my practicing my religion on the ACOE land.
I'm instructed to have bigger guns, more guns and more ammo in case of wild boar, raccoon attacks, or whatever

Well, I occasionally like to run my jetski on COE lakes. I carry a flare gun for emergencies.
I think a hot magnesium flare to COM would...light up the problem area
very well, and call attention to any emergency.
Now I just need a holster.

The COE doesn't care about any of that. Towns might put pressure on them but the rank and file, especially the management, are very quick to remind you that their responsibility is flood control...period. The Col. of the Ft. Worth District stopped just short of telling me that I should be very grateful for whatever crumbs he was willing to give me in the recreational use of COE lands. If they had their way, they would put up 6' barbed wire fence around the property and order everyone to stay off. The public and public use of the COE land is a thorn in their side. Concern about people protecting themselves on COE property is about as much value as lint out of your navel.RPB wrote:S

Isn't there legislation in play to fix extend the national park rules to COE lands?

Re: Disarmed
We just need to remove "flood control" and "recreational lands" from the Army's responsibilities then.
Then they'll need less funding.
And the Col. of the Ft. Worth District will have a different job.

There's several bills out there in the US Congress, perhaps one will see daylight, unlike the "slam dunk" Campus Carry in TexasRex B wrote:
