Canes

Post by RPB »

About 3 weeks ago I gave away my cane since I hadn't needed it in a while and a friend really needed one ( I did that several years ago too, and bought the one I just gave away)

(When I was 20 I could throw an 80 pound bag of concrete over each shoulder and jog out to the car ... now my back makes noises, knees complain and hernia laughs with just one bag of concrete)
County Commissioners meet in the Courthouse and the pistol and knife and pepper spray have to stay outside our courthouse and they need a reminder on Stewardship when they are asking about raising taxes and subsidizing a city gym/pool with a half million dollars which is poorly managed ... so people in the city pay to go to ones from other cities nearby up to 40 miles away ...so the city uses !,000 watt halogen bulbs on the sign instead of the 600 watt ones thinking more people will come if the sign is brighter, when they should be lowering expenses with the 23 watt florescent floods on photocells..... they (some are newly elected) need to hear the stewardship sermon.
So anyway, last week I found myself needing a cane again
http://www.canemasters.com/index.php?main_page=index" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Figured I'll get a basic B-Grade one from canemasters to use for now.... and 2 blank stock canes to make a couple myself so I can put the teeth where I want them, make it diamond shaft probably or octagonal etc design my own horn, and do the finishing etc. much like their "custom order cane"

I got ideas on designing a unique one with some features from options http://www.canemasters.com/index.php?ma ... page&id=53" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And, figured I"d pass along info for others who might be like-minded do-it-yourselfer or need a cane on a budget.right now people... I'm going to design one which TSA won't mind, ... and another one that's pretty radical..with a Shark's Tooth type Horn but some eyes and paint making it into a more realistic sparrow's/bird head beak type thing maybe ... Image

1 ea. Hickory 7/8" B-Grade Street Cane
Select Cane Length - 36"
$29.95

1 ea. Raw Stock Cane
Wood Type - Hickory with Heartwood
Select Cane Length - 37"
Extra rubber tip - 4
$46.75

1 ea. Raw Stock Cane
Wood Type - Hickory
Select Cane Length - 37"
$37.95

My diamond shaft, when I'm done shaping it, like the ones Canemasters shape, should work like the teardrop Image, but with 4 edges http://www.canemasters.com/index.php?ma ... page&id=53" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Then I'll decide if it needs teeth/rib back etc.

I know some on this forum are real familiar with Canemasters :tiphat:

I've been thinking a cane could be a pretty handy accessory. Be interested to see your finished projects.

I guarantee they won't be as pretty as the Canemaster top of the line ones,
Rather than the dragon teeth/Shark's teeth/rib back cuts, I'm looking at aggressive pistol grip textures and thinking "decorative" pyramids as texture/scrapers/striking areas on a diamond shaped shaft, should be easy to do, making a small surface area for striking/scraping/sandpapering/leaving a mark for future identification... but I'm undecided yet, I'm not in a hurry on the ones I make, and the raw stock blanks are cheap ... I'd like their $350.00 fighting canes, but ... I also like DIY projects

I just have to keep my two over-80 neighbors wood lathes away from my new toys, they'll make prettier ones....
My motto has always been function over form... so I don't mind dressing funny if I'm comfortable.
Whatever I do, I'll enjoy it, and have 3 canes, none of which I'd want whacking me/scraping me nor pokin' me. (3 pounds each of hard hickory before carving... like a baseball bat...Babe Ruth used 40-54 oz .. often a 47 ounce hickory bat) so at 3 pounds ... 48 ounces ... maybe one could hit a homer

If you don't go overboard on the customization, they will usually let you take it on an airplane, while confiscating a kubaton on a girl's keychain.

This is a true story. A friend of mine when to meet someone at the airport and they stopped her for having a kubaton on her keychain. She also had a container of pepper spray attached to her keychain. The screener gave her a bad time about the kubaton, but never said a word about the pepper spray. :banghead:

Then the "airport cane" can be Hickory 7/8" B-Grade Street Cane
Select Cane Length - 36"
$29.95
http://www.canemasters.com/index.php?ma ... cts_id=569" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
for City Council meetin's (they meet at the city's Municipal Airport)
and my super radical don't scrape against the sandpaper special will be for County Commissioner meetin's in the County Courthouse "rlol"

Within the next couple hours, UPS should bring my delivery

Instead of grips/dragon teeth scrapers/gator back whatevers ...
I was thinking of threading the shaft of one as a Wooden screw/bolt until I saw the amount of work involved.

Even with a screw box jig ... it's work

I may do "something similar" though with a lathe/table saw/router ... my neighbors will want to do it probably; one makes wooden easter eggs, another just does all sorts of stuff to keep busy

Carved 30 minutes last night, on the plain hickory raw stock one, sanded about an hour this morning
So far, two more or less "standard" looking, and Have 1 taking shape of
Image
First thought was seahorse head with that shape
Image
2nd thought after realizing
1) I have arthritis still and not going to do as much hand carving as my mind thought my hand could do (last night was rough after that my hand hurt bad when trying to get to sleep, and I have no spare hand)
2) a snake head or bird head carved and painted on it will be as pretty/interesting/decorative and STRONGER than removing a whole lot of wood ... my seahorse snout would probably snap off/break
Image

Review:
A) The Standard Street cane is 7/8" comes with 7/8" rubber cane tip and a natural oiled type finish. I'm pleased I might sharpen or reshape the crook.horn a little, but absolutely worth $30.00 I might use a drill to sort of split the end into fangs on one or both... I'm going to do powertools rather than hand carving so much.

B) The 2 raw stock canes:
Both are a tight fit for a 1" rubber cane tip they are lightly sanded already
The one with hickory heartwood came with the crook/hook/horn pre-cut/slightly shaped similar to A) above
This is what the crook/end looks like on it and on A) above
Image

The plain hickory one had the longer uncut unshaped horn/crook just looked like a bent dowel rod until I shaped it; it's becoming a snake.bird/something
Both are the color of unfinished dowel rods, but are much heavier and stronger than a pine dowel rod
Both are worth the $30.00 each

I do not know if I'll texture/add teeth/grips etc, I'm pretty happy with them without grips etc.

I'll MIGHT do photos when there's more to show. But, then people seeing this would identify me by my cane, and that's why I rarely post photos of my unique hat any more. I did on a kayak fishing forum and a guy I never saw before in a grocery store approached me and said "Are you RPB from the forum?" and I was like ... which forum? .... (concealed is concealed.)

I have one of these: http://www.whistlecreek.com/hawrootwalst.html. I've had it for years and it has been my favorite cane all this time. And it is STOUT too. It will pretty much total anybody I hit with it. I call it my shillelagh.

When I flew to Florida in May, I took it with me and left my gun at home. The thing is, I actually DID need to bring it, as my back was really acting up, and I had to carry my luggage around before boarding, etc. TSA let me take it through security, but I had to leave it on the conveyor and subject it to X-Ray along with all my other stuff....so I still had to limp and stoop over through the scanner until I could get the cane back. And when I boarded the plane, both ways, the flight attendant took it away from me before the plane pulled away from the terminal. The trouble is, they wouldn't give it back as soon as we got there, so I had to sit and wait for it to be handed back to me so that I could get off the plane with the rest of my family.

I really, Really, REALLY hate TSA.

Ed Loomis is in numerous Youtube Videos when Chanel 7 News ran stories

I have no affiliation with any. ... just providing info for any interested.
==============================

I got one hook reshaped to a more aggressive shape, the biting area point is about the size, shape and sharpness of one front tooth. I haven't found ANY online like that design, so I posted photos. And it has a groove. It's sort of like a grapefruit spoon. My own design ;-)

Got a blister ( a drillbit i used for a guide hole broke off so I had to do more manual stuff than I intended I thought about leaving half a drillbit in there, and thought "metal detector" .

not great photos, but I made the middle one which was like the more blunt one more pointy and spooned out a groove

Now it's ready for church tomorrow (along with my XD45,Glock 26 and Keltec P11) and ... it's time to get a bandaid for the blister. I'll work more on the round conehead pointy one another day.

The one I worked on this morning is the middle one, with the spoon/groove, in the photo of 3

My across the street neighbor , when borrowing something today, said she didn't enjoy having it gouge her back or shoulder blade, so it's sharp enough. "rlol" (No I didn't assault her, she wanted to try it on herself and see.) :smilelol5:

On the next one, I'm doing the slant on the "tooth point" the opposite direction pretty radical (marked where I'll cut in pencil)
Ignore the fish head/ell whatever; I'll sand off the face on the conehead one, I was just bored and watching TV and playing after staining them, though I'll sand more later, just wanted to see.
Entertainment for a Saturday afternoon
Compare the brownest one I did (that's the grooved one from above post) with the one with the pencil mark on the whiter unstained one.

No Jim. I hate TSA (well documented on these pages) for a whole host of other reasons, including that they took my cane away from me when I couldn't stand upright and made me hobble through the wanding/scanning process. I am merely irritated with the flight attendant.

Wasn't real happy with the amount of bite in the brown grooved one, so I took a round file to the center of the groove to create teeth/fangs

Still not thrilled with the amount of grip/bite

My next post will show the angle of the cut with the razor edge on the outside instead of the inside of the curve ...
