Well I finally retired.

Post by VoiceofReason »

For a while I thought the time would never come. Forty five years in Electronics. I think I am going to enjoy this. :hurry:

In a couple of weeks I will be moving South. I will be putting a house on my Son’s property West of Corpus Christi. He has told me he will build a shop for me. I have been doing some leather work on the side for the last three years. I think I have learned a lot and am pretty good at it now. I think I will do some custom work as a paying hobby. I am not going to allow that to turn into a regular job though.

I intend to travel some with my wife and enjoy.
God Bless America, and please hurry.

Congratulations and best wishes. I hope that your retirement plans turn out better than mine did. I retired March 1st and have been busier since then than I was when I had a full time job. It turns out that my job was a buffer between me and all of the things the other people wanted me to do.

I may have to go get another job so that I can rest up. :biggrinjester:

VOR,

Congrats on the retirement, hope you live long and enjoy. Remember to keep yourself active and not lay down, bad things tend to happen to the guys when they lay down upon retirement.

Congrats. :cheers2: I retired from full time in Feb this year. Went to working part time 16-24 hours a week at a local mom and pop (and daughter) hardware store less than a mile away. Now my 7 yr old grand daughter is filling in much of the rest of the time. Financially I'm not as well off but life has been much more rewarding and satisfying. I am in the process of getting out of my car hobby and into less expensive, possibly more fun, side lines. Leather work has always been an interest but have never done much of it.
Good luck in your new life. Make the most of your new freedoms while you can.

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Retirement may be a long way off but I suggest starting to think about it now. Start putting back a little. Don’t get the majority of your retirement tied up in the stock market. I know people that had to postpone retirement when the market dropped. Glad I wasn’t one. One guy worked for MCI and had all his retirement in Worldcom stock.

Retirement may seem a long way off but it will come. Make a career that you can look back on with pride.

I think I can get used to this.
God Bless America, and please hurry.

I retired in 2007.
From 2007 until now in 2012, it seemed like I had less time than when I worked full time.
I'm finally getting caught up on the "To-Do lists that had an item or 2 left over each day/month/year since the 1970s, .... then I'll soon be vacationing and fishing more ... well, after I add more insulation in the attic, repaint the rest of the inside of the house, remodel the kitchen and other bathroom since I only remodeled one so far and ... then I'll get that ham radio license and fish more and vacation, after I clean the shed and put in some more shelving in the shed to organize a room for radio equipment and get a tower for the antenna and then I'll fish and vacation right after I ...

On the up side, the odd thing is that since I spent on things which lower my outgo (LED light bulbs now an LED TV that uses only 30 watts) stuff that saves energy ... Even though my income is half what it was when working ... I have twice the money to spend and an extra thousand or so left over each month. (no credit card debt, house/car paid off, lower utilities, etc)
Dad said "When your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep becomes your downfall" ... I'll be teaching that to our County Commissioners and City Council next month. ;-) Stewardship VS. mismanagement/bad management. (It's why schools need to layoff teachers while raising your TAXES to pay for the bazillion watt bulbs outdoors and watering the sports fields while it's raining)

Ok, I need to reform the governments, then I'll go on vacation and go fishing and stuff ...

wait ... vacation? vacation from what? I'm retired ... Oh, I forgot.

Ain't that the truth. I still have another 20+ years or so to go before retirement. I look forward to Mondays so I can slow down a bit. Vacations wear me out. I have so much vacation time saved up I've been able to sell back 40 hours each of the last two years and I probably will again this year.
