New BUG

Post by snatchel »

Picked up a new BUG today. This will also come in handy when I'm wearing slacks and a tucked in shirt...... easy pocket piece. I hate .380, but it beats a gun left at home. I think there is a place for a .380 in the rotation :tiphat:

It came with the LaserMax CenterFire... haven't figured out if I want it on there or not. Seems pointless, but YMMV.

Nice, I plan to get one too for a BUG for either pocket or ankle. How do you feel about the laser on/off toggle button?

I think it's super easy to operate, but virtually useless. Now, others on here will disagree, and for very good reasons... but let me explain why I dont think I will be using it.

This thing is a belly gun. It sports a barrel length of 2.75 inches, a sight radius not much longer than that, and a grip that I can basically get two fingers on. I don't need a laser to rip it out of my pocket and shoot a guy that is 6 inches away from me. I mean.... I don't plan on really "reaching out" and touching someone with a gun like this, and a cartridge such as the .380.

For bigger guns, say a Glock 19 or so... I can understand putting a laser on it. It's a primary weapon, and if lasers are your thing and help you shoot accurate, I think they are fantastic. I have had lasers before.. crimson trace and the like... I found that I immediately got lazy the moment I picked it up, didn't even use the sights, and proceeded to punch out 5 inch target groups.

I shoot worse with a laser than without one. The LCP is a backup to my primary, which is a back up to me being somewhere else. (I wanted to quote this, but I don't remember who used it. Speak up, clever speaker!) If things go so far south that I have to resort to a Ruger LCP with 7 rounds of .380.... I'm not going to have the time to activate a laser, aim accurately, and shoot. I'm going to rip that little guy out of my pocket and squeeze off 7 rounds as fast as my little fingers let me, assuming I'm not dead already.

I know, a very long winded reply..... but I figured I'd get it all out there. I do plan on carrying this alone sometimes, for instance when I have no other option but to pocket carry something... but again, the same rules apply.

What do I think of the laser? I think it's a novelty, but useful for some. To be quite honest, I can see it going up for sale on the forum before too long. We shall see.

I feel exactly the opposite.

I have no use for a laser on my primary. I carry a Kimber Compact CDP II. Nice 4" barrel.
I would hope I have time to aim, but even if I dont, I feel pretty accurate with the 4" barrel. Just the way the gun fits in my hand, point and shoot is doable.

I have a ruger LCP with a crimson trace. I have the laser set to where when I am using the sights and I am on target, the laser is just below being visible.
Thus, if I have the oppurtunity to aim, the laser is not distracting me when I am on target.

BUT, if I dont have time to aim, that little 2.75" barrel can be hard to point in the right direction! Point and shoot is A LOT harder.
So as a last resort, point and shoot, I like the laser.

Just my 2 cents.

You can get some 9mm now that are small enough for pocket guns.

The new Springfield XDS is a .45 for a pocket pistol. I picked up one of those a couple weeks ago.

True on the bigger 9mm and .45 variations of pocket guns. However, as stated, this is a 'backup.' I already carry either a G17 or G30 for primary. There is rarely an occasion that I have to carry the LCP as a primary...

Hopefully you'll never need a back (or a primary weapon, for that matter!) but it has to be comforting to know it's there if you ever need it. Although I carry all day every day, I still haven't made the leap to carrying a backup.

As for the laser... I'd give it a shot (pun intended) and see if it isn't more useful than you're giving it credit for. If you spend an afternoon at the range giving it a chance and still don't see a benefit, then by all means sell it. But since you have it already, it seems like it would be worthwhile to put it through a bit of a test and see if your initial thoughts hold true in practice. Squeeze off those 7 shots as fast as your fingers will let you... both with and without the laser. You might not see a difference... but then again, you might.

I did give it a shot. Just isn't for me....

Again, even on full sized guns, I don't like a laser. I just don't shoot well with them

Me some too. I wind up watching the dot dancing all over the place and go crazy trying to make it stop. When I turn it off, crazy goes away.

Essentially the same thing I do. I go crazy wondering why i'm moving so much watching that laser bounce all over the target rather than actually shooting well.

I generally don't like lasers on handguns but on my LCP I prefer it to the "sights". The lack of an actual rear sight makes it harder to get on target quickly for the type of up close range at which the gun is useful. For me the LCP is a "pull out of the pocket and shoot" pistol and the laser allows me to see my point of aim more quickly.

Maybe it's just me (and it probably is). Laser sights have numerous advantages when you may need them. Practicing with a laser is no different than practicing with iron sights. You get good at it with practice. Personally, in a high stress, pucker factor gunfight (and they all are), I'll take a really rapid 5" group in COM any day with a laser. I practice with both iron sights and laser sights, so I'm not knocking iron sights. Also, if your laser is sighted correctly, it should not be visible when you have a proper iron sight sight picture. But, it's there for you to take an accurate shot if you have neither the time or position for a proper iron sight picture. MHO, YMMV.

Very true, G26.

The only time I have used lasers and appreciated them was with a rifle, specifically an M4, in operations. At night it was nice to have when my ACOG was still a bit too dark to see through, but other than that--don't really dig them.
