I have a Crimson Trace laser grip on my carry gun solely as a psychological deterrent. I hope that if an aggressor can see a red dot on the center of his chest, it might bring home the point that a hole will soon be there. Hopefully, that may cause him to stop his aggression and allow me to not have to shoot.

However, at the range I turn the laser off. I shoot much better with my sights than the laser.

My grandfather was a lifetime hunter, and owned nothing but shotguns and rifles until he was 77.

When he did finally decide he needed a pistol, he bought a 5 shot .38 S&W with a CT grip.

He told me that the reason he wanted the laser was he didn't want to kill anyone, and with it he could shoot them in the knee or something.

I told him that was a bad idea and he should just aim center mass, and I think he listened. Thank God, he never had to use it.

I can see where a laser is a great additional sighting tool...but if it is not trained with properly, it can also be a detriment to effective self defense.

Personally, in a high stress, pucker factor gunfight (and they all are), I'll take a really rapid 5" group in COM any day with a laser.

Agreed. I think that this is the exact point. I am still undecided on lasers because I worry about batteries on my life saving device. That said, I don't have any delusions that I'd be using a laser on the range to "get more tens" than with iron. I'd be using the laser to get more downrange in closer/rough proximity to the BG when the poo was hitting the paddles.

Hopefully you'll never need a back (or a primary weapon, for that matter!) but it has to be comforting to know it's there if you ever need it. Although I carry all day every day, I still haven't made the leap to carrying a backup.

As for the laser... I'd give it a shot (pun intended) and see if it isn't more useful than you're giving it credit for. If you spend an afternoon at the range giving it a chance and still don't see a benefit, then by all means sell it. But since you have it already, it seems like it would be worthwhile to put it through a bit of a test and see if your initial thoughts hold true in practice. Squeeze off those 7 shots as fast as your fingers will let you... both with and without the laser. You might not see a difference... but then again, you might.

Again, even on full sized guns, I don't like a laser. I just don't shoot well with them

My wife has s&w bg380. The laser is built in and she hates it. Just as you state, she shoots poorer with it than without it. I agree with her as I've tried it. Although, I admit that if I were in a situation where I couldn't sight in the target, getting a laser on target would be helpful. I do not use one on my s&w 1911.

j/k on the hearing comment. some folks just want others to embrace technology and I do. i track my guns via my iphone, i just care to shoot using gun sights and my eyes.

I think this is more marketing hype than reality. An aggressor with a gun won't be looking at his chest any more than you will be looking at yours. YMMV

I have the same gun and I rarely turn the laser on. I have put 600+ rounds on the BG380 and have shot perhaps less than 25 rounds with the laser, just to test it and check the alignment

So, I don't mind having it, but have learnt not to depend on it.

My first pocketgun was a BG380. I despised the laser on it. I shot that gun terribly, so I was surprised when I bought Elsie and took her to the range I shot fairly accurately with the irons.

I really like how a laser points out my ability to shake like an old drunk when I think I am super smooth.

While at the range yesterday, we had a mouse-gun competition shoot. While I could not make shots past about 20 yds accurately with the LCP, a buddy and fellow forum member was actually making 30 yd shots...consistently. That was impressive.
