Is it acceptable?

Post by KC5AV »

It's time for me to renew (expiration in December), and I was going to take care of that tomorrow, but I just got an email from the instructor. I occasionally assist him with classes when he needs an additional instructor. He wanted to know if I'd be available to help him out a little bit tomorrow afternoon.

Is is acceptable for me to go do my renewal portion in his class tomorrow morning, and then come back after lunch and teach a part of the class for new licensees?

Only if you are a certified Texas CHL instructor or have been approved by DPS as a guest instructor.

I don't see why not. You are an instructor, aren't you?

Yes. I don't see why it would be a problem. I just wanted some other opinions. Thanks.

It's my understanding that if you are already an instructor you just need to send in your $$$s and a note that you are an instructor.

No renewal class needed.

If I'm mistaken somebody pipe up before I do something wrong.

Instructors have to renew their CHL just the same as anyone else. And we have to renew our instructor certifications every 2 years. The two are totally seperate. The only thing that is combined is if you are not already a CHL, then you can use the instrutors class as your CHL class too and get both.

And, since KC5AV is an instructor, no reason you can't assist or teach part of it after or before renwing in the same class. Personally, I would think as long as you were there, you could probably even instruct part of the renewal portion as long as the other instructor that will sign your CHL-100 observed you knew covering the same class material.

You are correct. You just send in a copy of your instructor certificate with your renewal barcode receipt.

Instructors dont need a class to renew their CHL. And, if we did, couldn't we just sign off on our own CHL-100? :confused5

Ok, that's interesting. I remember them saying that as long as we maintained out instructor certification, we wouldn't have to renew. I just didn't know how they would accomplish it. That makes sense.
