Buying guns as a lady......

... overheard a sales kid telling a woman that the revolver she was looking at was a semi auto because the cylinder will turn to the next round and fire as long as she pulled the trigger.

It was a semiautomatic with a round clip.

This week's Academy ad lists a Taurus 4510 Public Defender Revolver for sale
and describes its round count as "Capacity: 4 + 1".

A simple "5" would be the correct answer.

Academy has done this on other occasions with regard to revolver round capacities.

I cruised over to the academy web site and looked up said revolver. The description {edit] for the Public Defender .45/.410 [/edit] says:
"The revolver features a 5-round magazine, and a firing pin block and transfer bar."

The Public Defender .410/.45, OTOH, merely has "5-shot capacity"
I wonder if the sales kid would say the .45/.410 is semi-auto where the .410/.45 is a revolver.

A couple of weeks ago at the local gun show I asked a well known company in the gun shows if they had a Chiappa Rhino. He looked at me rolled his eyes and while walking away said never heard of such a thing. What an ASS. Fine I will give my money to somebody else!!

Has anyone else had issues while looking at guns. I went to the San Antonio Academy on Military Dr to look at the
Taurus Raging Judge magnum because they are the only ones in town that had one in stock. Keep in mind this is a large gun that shoots .410/.45LC and .454 casull.
As soon as I asked to see it the guy behind the counter says " you don't want to see that gun, you want to look at this" and he pulls out a .380. I informed him if I had wanted to see a .380 I would have asked for one. I literally received 5 minutes of grief from this "kid" because the Raging Judge magnum was "to much gun" for me. Gratz to you Academy, you just lost a sale.

I carry a 1911 .45 and/or a Taurus Judge Public Defender.. I frequently get comments from guys at gun stores about it being "to much gun". One guy at cabella's actually told me that I couldn't conceal a .45 because it was so heavy it would pull my pants down.

How do you combat stupid people while shopping for a gun?

I've had the exact same problem...that is once I can get the salesman's attention. Apparently, being female can make you invisible at the gun counter. I do love it when they try to make the sale to my Husband, and his response is to turn and look at me and say something like "it's your gun, what do you want?". LOVE HIM!

These are excellent examples of what we deal with, and it gets much worse if a) your knowledge is limited and b) if you're alone. And yes, requesting a manager will usually resolve the problem. If it doesn't, we then get to find out if he's just stupid or stupid mean.

At the auto parts store one day, the guy says to me "you should have your boyfriend take care of this for you"... *sigh*

My wife has experienced idiotic men, usually customers, at Academy. I believe on 3 separate occasions.

Once, a guy recommended a small pink gun. I don't recall what it was but at the time she just smiled and nodded.
FWIW, my wife is fairly girly and loves the color pink, but does not have one pink gun.

Another time, some guy recommended a .22 Derringer. Once again she just smiled.
Keep in mind this was when she wasn't as confident as she is now at firearms... But already owned a small collection.

The last time in Academy was when a guy suggested to her a Glock 19, stating it was the best gun ever. I have a sneaking suspicion he was showing off his knowledge and manlihood. She smiled and I replied for her saying "she already owns one." He said "Oh" with a surprised look on his face and walked away.

A few months ago, some guy made a comment about me. I'm a young, smaller framed male and I was looking at a Taurus Judge or was it the S&W Governor? Either way this older man said to the firearms clerk, "that gun is bigger than he is!"
I decided to leave it alone and didn't say anything, which is weird because usually my wit takes over. After the moment had passed I realized I should have said something like "well I could probably out shoot you with it, old man." ah well.

I have the same problem at large chain stores. I am in my early 20's and vast majority of the guys behind the counter completely ignore me. So annoying! If my dad happens to be in the store with me I will call him over and I get a sales associate in a matter of minutes so I usually drag him with me if I am buying. The sales associates usually get really confused look on their faces or an are-you-serious look when my dad says that I want to look at something.

Had a chance to educate a dealer at the gun show today about the slide stop issues with the older model Walther PPS and also the difference (besides the model number ) between the standard and MA models. My husband just stood back and smiled. Kinda cool.

Thought I'd share a story that I know I've mentioned before, but it seems perfect for this thread.

I was at a gun store, and this stereotypical "sweet little old lady" (barely over 5 feet tall, might weigh 110 lbs soaking wet) walked up to the counter and put down the cash for a FN Scar 17 in .308. She said her husband had tried to talk her into the 5.56, but she wanted a "big caliber".

I learned early on to respect women's judgement and ability when it comes to weapons. My grandmother is a mean shot with a 20 gauge.

I really haven't run into that, but I live in a small town and shop mom and pop kind of places. I actually had the opposite happen when I bought my first gun. Well, I've always had a rifle, so I'll say my first hand gun. I walked to the pawn shop around the corner, thinking I'd get something small, like a .380. The guys told me I needed something small enough to conceal that I could point and shoot and kill. I left the shop with a Ruger SP101 .357 magnum. Scared the crud out of me the first time I shot it! (Actually, scared me for probably the first 300 rounds I put through it!) It took a while, but I'm a darn good shot with it now. My oldest soldier-son and I went to the range when he was home a couple of months ago. He thought I wouldn't be able to decently shoot his .45 revolver. I walked over, picked it up, put two shots in the center ring and smiled. He then had to admit, mama was a better pistol shot than he was. Wanted to challenge me to a rifle contest-he's an Army sharpshooter, and I am no fool, so I passed!

It's definitely not just the women who get the idiots. I went into a small but notorious shop here, on the off chance that I could find some Wilson magazines for my 1911. They did have them, but way over market price. I asked to see what kind of .45 self defense ammo they had. The salesman didn't know the difference between .45 ACP and .45 LC. His eyes glazed overr as I attempted to explain why that wouldn't work. Only thing they had close to self defense ammo was Glaser rounds. Had to hold my tongue as I walked out.
