Texas CHL Forum Squad

What a great match at PSC today. with 10 scenarios and 62 shooters it felt more like a "regional match."

We had a Texas CHL Forum Squad of 14 shooters. Six of the shooters were women from the forum and Donna's woman's class at PSC. All did very well and everyone had a great time. We had shooters that represented all levels of proficiency from first time shooters up. Everyone was very supportive of each other and we all got laughed at sometime during the match.

I won't tell any tales on anyone in the squad. We made an agreement early that it was going to be a Las Vegas day. What happened there, stayed there. However, if anyone wants to tell on themselves, this is the place. Weigh in below.

One thing for certain, I know this will not be the last time we all squad together.

Three procedurals in a single stage....

I could not have had a better time......more lessons learned everytime I shoot. Thank you to all that were there for some great memories.

I'll play! From what I remember...one procedural for opening the cylinder while not behind cover (guilty!), a few downright misses, and very slow times. And I learned that I don't do well with a target bobbing back and forth in front of me, that was just wrong (in three languages!). But that's the most fun I've had with a firearm in my hand.


I want to put out a special thanks to everyone that was there today, pat yourselves on the back for taking in all of us newcomers and making us feel very welcome to PSC and IDPA and for everyone's patience. The new shooter orientation was very informative, all the information needed to get started was in the presentation. Good job TraCoun. I am still on "information overload" right now, maybe I'll remember more tommorrow.

jbirds, thank you for taking me to this. Not sure I'd have come on my own, I really appreciate the company! I'll be shooting with you much more.

HighVelocity, I watched you shoot quite a bit, thanks for all the (free!) wheelgun tips you didn't know you showed me. I'm looking foward to cooking some kydex for myself!

SRVA, I can't make it to the match this Saturday at Thunder, but I'll be joining IDPA very soon and am looking forward to shooting with you guys.

1 Procedural. I had 8 rds in the gun instead of 6. Doh! And missed a couple of headshots!

OK, my turn also. Approached a barricade on the wet grass and slid right past it. I was trying to moon-walk back to the barricade and get my gun on the target at the same time. Kind of distracting when you hear your wife and friends laughing in the background.

OK, I know the cure is to shoot more matches and study, but since I got Grandkid's and retired I don't seem to have any spare time.

I didn't actually shoot on the squad, since it looked pretty big, and I didn't want to slow you guys down. But I did enjoy meeting some of you, and watching you shoot.

My most embarrasing moment was on the last stage, where you shoot from the prone position. We did a lot of that in the Air Force qualification, but I haven't since, so I was looking forward to it. Once I got in position, with my hands gripping the pistol and resting on the mat, I found the bill of my baseball cap prevented me from seeing the sights. When I tilted my head up enough to see the target, it was too high to get a sight picture. I had to bend my elbows and raise the pistol up off the mat to see.

I managed to hit the targets, but with my elbows bent far too much, and the pistol close to my face, I felt like an idiot.

Well, I think there were at least 2 squads due to the large number of folks.
It was great to shoot at PSC, nice people, nice range, nice stages.

Let's see, my most embarrasing moment was after shooting the 6 stationary targets where you give 1 shot each, then reload, then shot the head 1 shot each. Well, I missed nearly all the head shots! It's that weird feeling all over again when you walk up to the target and don't see any holes.

Edit to add: the FTN was a bit embarrasing too. I can't find my old thread where I mentiond having no holes in my targets, but I think I relived it at this match. Seems I've been too into silhouette competitions and spreading myself too thin; now which one to focus on.... hmmm.

I started off the match a bit to anxious to put holes in targets. I went straight from one scenario to the other, thinking they were just one big scenario. I wasn't the first in line after that.

Like ElGato, I also had a lot of procedurals. I have a bad habit of dropping my magazines during a tactical reload. (GRRRR.)

I also learned a lot and got to meets some people I didn't know. I got to meet Skiprr, Scott Murray, High Velocity, among many others.
I also got to meet other ladies. Unfortunately, there aren't many of us shooting, so it was fun to shoot with them too.

I shot the whole match in 60 seconds, was zero down, had no penalties and gnomes followed me from stage to stage picking up my brass. Oh wait, that was the match I shot in the car on my way down there while I was asleep in the passenger seat.

Embarrassing moment? Hmmm, that was probably when I ran to a barrel and tried to kneel behind it. There's something about that whole, object in motion tends to stay in motion thing that was working hard to pull me to the ground BEYOND the barrel. Then there's the wounded non-threat and a miss or two, but my per match avg goof # was lower than usual.

I had an awesome time and it was great to meet all the forum folks. I did a lot of watching and learning as well as experiencing things I'd never seen or done before like shooting prone and wheelgun tac-loads (which I am having difficulty accepting).

Maybe I can embarrass myself in front of a whole new group of shooters. But I'll have a great time.

I'm jealous that I couldn't embarrass myself with the rest of all of you! The last time I went to an IDPA match, I felt pretty much the only embarrassed shooter. I was invited by j1132s to go, but unfortunately (fortunately) I had a prior commitment with KR Training. I will try to keep my calendar open for the next one, please keep us informed for the next CHL squad match..

This is how it got started:

Donna and I will be there also. We have volunteered to SO but Charles wants to give us a month off. How about we set up a Texas CHL Forum Squad and shoot the match together. Who's in?

It was basically a real informal squadding at our regular monthly match at PSC - something you guys in Austin, Dallas, or where-ever could easily do.

All it took to get the ball rolling was SRVA's post.

My embarrassing moment was getting four (4) procedurals on a single stage. Fortunately for me, we realized that this stage did not meet the course of fire rules (weak hand at > 7yds), so we moved up and I got to shoot it again, trying really hard to remember which hand was my weak one!

Sorry I couldn't shoot with the squad, but I got to see y'all as you cycled through bay D. I probably met some of you without connecting your screen names and faces/real-names. I know that was true of Venus until after the match we put two and two together...
