MacBook.... OOOoooOOOooooo

Post by snatchel »

Wife and I were in desperate need of a new laptop... one of ours crashed, so we went shopping. I have wanted a MacBook for a long time, but the darn things are so expensive! I was looking at ultrabooks, and was looking at Toshiba, HP, and other models instead. The nicer ones ran $899.

I glanced over at the MacBooks and saw that the 13' Air was marked down from $1199 to $1099. Pretty much set it for me. I traded in my 1st Gen iPad for $150, and applied a $100 student discount. After taxes, out the door I paid $950--can't beat that with a stick.

So far, I'm loving it. I am trying to get used to the operating system... slow work, but much, much smoother and faster than what I was working with before. Good buy.

I like Macs just fine, I use an iPad at home, but have all PCs and an Android phone. I like the PCs because I can always work on them without special tools and parts are easy for me to come by.
If I had the money I'd buy the wife a nice little macbook air like that.

Same here, though I do have a PC (Win 2k) around here somewhere. But in my defense, I'm not entirely sure where it is, and I don't think I've even plugged it in in the better part of a decade (hmm... I wonder if there are any updates?).

If I had to manage our 1400+ real and virtual Windows server with a Mac I might be pulling out what little is left of my hair :banghead:

What tools, if you don't mind me asking? I spent the better part of 8 years as a Windows admin and it's part of the reason I switched to Macs (via Linux).

I usually used CoRD to manage a small subset of servers, and for anything that required MMC / AD config, I just RDPd in to a Win server.

I love me some Mac. My last two were MacBook Pros. (iCore7 replaces core 2 Duo) The one before that was toshiba satellite 1400. (Dual booted it to Ubuntu.)
I have to maintain the PCs at work, and readily admit that the less expensive Win-tel's are just fine for the business office were MS Office is the app of the land.
I'm running XP on Virtual box for those rare occasions when I just have to use a Windows only system. (Kronos time system, and Web accessible, Samsung Security cam DVRs.)
I also run a car tire on my Honda Valkyrie.
Finally, I'm going to EDC at Ruger LCP (.380)

Guess I'm pretty darkside. :evil2:

One piece of disturbing news though. Apple seems to be going to sealed boxes. (I was inconsolable when they dropped the Xservers.)
Computer World reports that the new MacBook Pro have no user accessible parts, including RAM which is soldiered to the board. They worry that this is a sign of things to come.
The 'sealed-box' Mac: Cutting-edge design or planned obsolescence?

Edited for 5 thumb spelling.

LoL @ Everyone.

I swore that I would never buy another PC after the latest crash. I have many, many friends with MacBooks or Mac desktops... they love them. Heck, they swear by them. They never complain about issues, ever.

Yes, this little beast was expensive. If I can get 3 years (what I have come to expect from the PC's) out of this with minimal complaints, I'll be happy.

We still have a Toshiba Satellite running strong in the house to appease the PC crowd.

13"??? For that price, I hope it comes with one of those sickly-looking nerds in the black t-shirt and skinny jeans with horn-rimmed glasses to read the screen to me!
:coolgleamA:

FWIW, I'm running an 11 year old Windows XP desktop that has never had malware, never experienced a fatal crash, and has never been rebuilt. I also use a Windows 7 laptop (Lenovo W520) for work. It's a beast. I would've gone with the Linux build but my business unit has a few home grown apps that require MS.

I'm not a Windows homer, either.
