Typical TAM...ending the argument with a sermon steeped in common sense and fact! I'm going to jump off into the Apple (Macbook) pool soon. Thanks for helping with my decision TAM! I still have some reservations, but I trust that it will all work out!

Several years ago I was having issues regarding my PC's hardware dying. Seems a Chinese electrolytic capacitor manufacturer used a counterfeit recipe for the electrolyte, and after several years, those capacitors were dying in droves. It caught many motherboard manufacturers, including the Dell I used daily. Dell covered many of their products, even though the warranty was long over -- but not 'server' level machines like mine. Thanks, Dell!! So, in order to run some software that I just couldn't be without (accounting software), while I ordered and replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the MB, I had to bring up an old machine, and install Windows XP. I only needed this machine for a week or so, but I had to burn a Windows XP license to install the hundreds of security updates. So I spent (I think) a couple hundred dollars for the license to use the OS for a week.

Apple's OS upgrades are $19.99, and you can install it on all the Apple machines you own. And there are no licensing hassles, you don't have to go to a special Apple website, and beg for your license to be re-enabled just because you increased the RAM, or replaced a network card. You don't have to enter long strings of random characters to enable the license (was that a 'Oh', or a 'Zero'?, a '5' or a '6', a 'Q' or an 'O'?)

You might have an occasional application that crashes, but not the OS. And unlike PCs the first general troubleshooting step for Macs is NOT "reboot the machine to see if the issue goes away".

I guess they've lowered their pricing then. It used to be $29 for the upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion. I haven't upgraded yet to Mountain Lion. Have you upgraded, and if so, how do you like it compared to Lion? I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Personally, I'm loving Mountain Lion. It's got some new features to it that help integrate it further with my iOS devices. Reminders, Messages, etc. It runs very smooth (as you'd expect from all of Apple's OSs and I've had no problems. Though, to be honest, I've never had any problems as far back as Tiger. LOL. IMHO, definitely worth the upgrade.

Made the Windows --> Mac switch last year. The law firm I work for also made the switch. None of us have looked back. My MBP and work (iMac) are great machines.
