Local school districts adapt [SIC] plans to keep students safe

I think they mean adopt ... perhaps they should get some sleep

NEWARK --Tom Suriano will never forget the day of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.

Although the incident happened more than 1,000 miles from Licking County, it changed everything for educators, he said.

As principal of Heritage Middle School, Suriano has watched local schools enhance their safety plans to protect students.

"The best thing I can say we do now is everybody has a plan," he said.

Since Columbine, 43 school shootings have happened around the United States, Newark Police Chief Steven Sarver said. One hit close to home when a teenager shot and killed three students at Chardon High School on Feb. 27.

"The unfortunate part is, we are not stopping this from occurring," he said. "But by talking about it, we might reduce it."
Lockdowns are an important way to keep students safe. But many experts and law enforcement officers think lockdowns aren't the only option, Sarver said.

"There is a time and a place for lockdowns and a time to find a safe route and get out," he told the group.

Some districts have adopted the ALICE philosophy, another strategy for responding to active shooters, Sarver said.

ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, Sarver said.

3:12 AM,
Adapt is correct. Adapt =adjust or modify fittingly. The schools have modified their plans to keep students safe. :tiphat:

I thought they got rid of the old plan and adopted new ones rather than adapting the old non-working one; but I see you are correct, they just modified the old non-working ones.

They should abandon the old feel-good ones and adopt the Harrold School District one, where Faculty and Staff may be armed,..

;-)

I recall in about 1971 at a store where I worked, one morning we talked about what we'd do if we ever got robbed, and a couple hours later that same day,. we got robbed ...talking about it didn't reduce the probabilities. That experiment has already been done ...

They adapted those plans, they're "talking about" adopting anti-bully plans
Newark Charter School is directed to develop or adopt a school-wide bully prevention program that is research-based.

I'm not sure why they say "develop OR adopt," as the two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. They could develop a plan and not adopt it, or they could adopt a plan someone else developed, or they could develop and adopt a plan, or they could use either their own plan they develop or someone else's plan and adapt it prior to adopting it..

:biggrinjester:

But yes, I see your point is:
They had a non-working plan
They kept the non-working plan
and modified it a little
so, adapt is correct ... sadly.

HOWEVER, once they adapted the plans ... they had to adopt them, else the work on the adaptations, is all for nothing if they are not "put into effect."

So ... we're both correct.
i.e. They had to have adopted the plans they adapted, if they didn't, it wouldn't have been newsworthy.. in fact. the adaptation of the plans is not all that newsworthy at all had they not been adopted. Discarded plans they wasted time adapting wouldn't be a big deal, unless they adopted them.

I propose the news writer could have said they "adopted the plans they adapted" but that just sounds awkward, and all that'sa newsworthy is that the "new plans" (old plans, as adapted, changed and modified), were adopted..
