NEWARK --Tom Suriano will never forget the day of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting.
Although the incident happened more than 1,000 miles from Licking County, it changed everything for educators, he said.
As principal of Heritage Middle School, Suriano has watched local schools enhance their safety plans to protect students.
"The best thing I can say we do now is everybody has a plan," he said.
Since Columbine, 43 school shootings have happened around the United States, Newark Police Chief Steven Sarver said. One hit close to home when a teenager shot and killed three students at Chardon High School on Feb. 27.
"The unfortunate part is, we are not stopping this from occurring," he said. "But by talking about it, we might reduce it."

"There is a time and a place for lockdowns and a time to find a safe route and get out," he told the group.
Some districts have adopted the ALICE philosophy, another strategy for responding to active shooters, Sarver said.
ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, Sarver said.
